Apparently I'm a natural

I went to the local music shop with an old family friend who now lives in Lexington outside of Austin. He needed new strings and is just now starting to learn to play in his early 40's, and I must say, he's gotten pretty good. Anyway, while he's talking to the shop owner I see a flashy Johnson madolin and pick it up. I just went to town on that thing, basically a really upbeat bluegrass thing. I've never picked up a mandolin before in my life. I guess listening to Nicklecreek and Allison Krauss really does play off. Now, anyone got a mandolin they'd like to get rid of?

Musician's Friend has one for like $80 that would probably hold you over until you could save for a better one.

They ARE fun to play, aren't they? Myself, I couldn't get the hang of those chords, so I had to invent my own, but they work fine. You can pick up a Fender "A" type for about $130.

8 stings in courses. Same as a twelve string I guess. You got 4 sets of strings to play, two strings in each set. Tuned from top to bottom G,D,A,E.

The "backwards" tuning is pretty neat, too. I think the fact that it's tuned in fifths has a lot to do with it being easy to make a pleasant sound.

Yeah, I guess that makes it cool. I dont know what a fifth is though. Never did learn theory. Scales and stuff I did, but not transposing, and all that other stuff.

A fifth (root & fifth note of scale) = a powerchord.

I love the super fast mandolin stuff. My drummer's dad plays mandolin, he has a few but his favorite is like $12,000 one.

I mean, my favorite guitar costed 50 bucks and 5000 marlboro miles that me, my mom, and my dad all chipped in to get. It was mostly them since I had no money and like 20 miles. I havnt found a guitar that's up to par with it yet. Bookmatched spruce top, bookmatched mahog back, mahog sides, 3 peice mahog neck, bound rosewood fretboard, nice binding around the body, and the famous Martin "herringbone" inlay on the back seperating the two peices. I have a custom pickguard that I made for it out of flamed walnut, real abalone inlays, Grover tuners. It's an awsome guitar.

I wasnt playing one with a strap. They're so light that you can just hold it with your forearm. the strings are so close together that you're using mostly your fingers to move the pick, not your wrist or forearm.

Beandip, IIRC you're a pretty tall and built dude. Seeing you with a mandolin would probably be hilarious. I definately say you get one. Then learn to play the sh*t outta that thing and post videos on the internet.

you recall correctly. I'm 6ft 3, and weigh 250-270 (havnt weighed in awhile). You said the same thing that my family friend, Barry said when I picked it. Told me I looked like the Jolly Green Giant playing a guitar. I would post videos on the net, but I have no way of doing so, unless someone here in Tx has a camera and can record for me.
