Are Carl Martin Effects Overrated?

Re: Are Carl Martin Effects Overrated?

thanks for the reply. i'd like to know some basic things like what they sound like, who uses them, how are they best used in a rig (like on the clean channel or with amp distortion, etc...), etc...

if anyone has some soundclips, especially of any high gain stuff they might have, that would be cool too

Can't really help you out on the soundclips side of things except to say try the website. I do remember them having more clips than most makers.

Usage of these pedals really determines on what you are trying to get out of your rig or how your rig allows. They sound good both ways to me. Different but both is good. There are some pedals which cannot be run into a clean amplifier because they sound poor. The pedals which really stand out are the ones that can be run both ways, and CM pedals do that in my experience.

Finally there is one more equation when running into a distorted amp... you need to know how to set pedals. It's really simple. Gain down Volume up. Doing it the other way generally results in slush. The voicing of the pedal will make a difference as well. Generally you want something with abit more mids if you're trying to push your amp "a little more".

So many ways with tone, so little space. Hope it helps you a bit. ;)

@barbarianbrute: Your question was "Are Carl Martin effects overrated?". The overall answer has been "No". Is that not what you wanted?

Re: Are Carl Martin Effects Overrated?

you guys just reminded me how much I would like to try out the plexitone into my valve junior head with my oversized 1x12 v30 clone loaded sealed cab.

Re: Are Carl Martin Effects Overrated?

Check out the Carl Martin website and forum. There are plenty of different clips on there, most of them done by Rid. I have a prototype of the Plexitone pedal, and it is the best drive pedal I have used to date. It gives me a great plexi sound, and more!

Re: Are Carl Martin Effects Overrated?

High gain...what do you mean by high gain??
It simply means loud!
Or is it much distortion, that is something else.
We have nothing for new style metal, as none of us plays anything like that, and thus have no frame to work from on that!
We have an amp coming up, but that is more of an hotrodded Marshall....

Do you really not know what almost every single guitarist is talking about when they say "high gain," or are you feigning ignorance to make a point & educate the masses on what you consider to be a mis-use of the term?

"What the hell is a tremolo bridge? Are you talking about a Floyd Rose vibrato bridge? Those are two very different things..."

;)

Re: Are Carl Martin Effects Overrated?

I have always thought that CM stuff sucks.

No true bypass, and mike fuller hasnt given his blessing to them, so they cannot sound good. Plus they arent indie to use or boutique as such, nor do they have the infamous 4558 chip with the vintage SRV tone.....

Hell my MT-2 sounded better than the PT, what a thin buzzy POS....

;) :D

What do you think??

Re: Are Carl Martin Effects Overrated?

that's alright, i get rid. if we were talking about networking and computers, i would be running circles around most everyone too.

thanks for trying to clarify what you perceived my thread to mean, but please allow me to correct you. rather than taking my thread title so literally, try to think of it as a thread i created to provoke discussion about carl martin products. i don't know much about them, but from what i've read on the internet, they seem slightly overrated. i'm not saying that as a matter of fact, just trying to learn more.

Barb

You might find people a tad more receptive towards you if you could find it in your heart to adopt a somewhat-less condescending tone.

Just a thought.

EDIT: Or rather, a less defensive verbal posture. You don't really condescend, I think. It's more reactionary when it needn't be.
