Are these Seymour Duncan 59s?

Re: Are these Seymour Duncan 59s?

Yep, and fairly early production examples, as well (circa 1977-1980 would be my guess)!

I have a bridge model like this with the red ink print, while others have black prints. Anybody know something about the different colors?

Re: Are these Seymour Duncan 59s?

I have seen red, blue and black as well. These are certainly really old, although I am no expert in dating pickups. I always learn something on these threads.

I have one like that with black lettering and the letter "O". Someone did a hack soldering job on it and it currently is non
functional. Is it worth it to have it repaired?

Re: Are these Seymour Duncan 59s?

I'd love to know more about this era as well.

From my understanding Seymour Duncan had their own humbucker bobbin mold made in mid-late 1979.
So I'm guessing these labels and a blank backing plate are from late 79 to 80-81?
This is also assuming Duncan did not use other parts to assemble humbuckers prior to 1979.
When did the stamped name in the back plate start?

I have a few early Duncan's that I'd like to know the meaning of the red and yellow "dots."
The labels and dots are all under the wax.

Re: Are these Seymour Duncan 59s?

When guitar builders were getting Duncan p'ups as OEM items, those dots were used to indicate assemblers if it was a neck or a bridge p'up, even though sometimes it was the exact same p'up and model.

Ancient history!

This was my timeline, but i have no proof for it.

1. no backlogo, small tag without winder initial from late 70 up to ?
2. no backlogo, small tag with winder initial from ? to 1983
3. big backlogo without MiA, small tag with winder initial from at least 1983 to 1988
4. small backlogo with MiA, small tag with winder initial from 1988 to 2002
5. small backlogo with MiA, large tag with SN and Model from 2002 to ?
6. small backlogo with MiA, large tag with date from ? to ?

That would mean no backlogo before 1983??

Re: Are these Seymour Duncan 59s?

The big back logo indeed came into use sometime around 1983. However, I believe it was discontinued around late 1986, possibly early 1987.
