Area-51 Wah Parts

Has anybody used parts from them? If so, are they any good?

I'm needing to get a new pot for my Crybaby (it's still the original pot) and am looking at other options besides the Hot Potz and Fulltone. The inductor may be changed at the same time and so far I'm leaning towards the red Fasel but am curious about the Area-51 inductor.

BTW, my wah is an old GCB-95 from 1990-91, Rev. E board. It's been heavily modded already.

Re: Area-51 Wah Parts

Thanks, Todd. Don't know why I didn't see that before. And I even searched too. Looks like the word is good according to many others besides Mike. I know the Fulltone pot is really good and I have a Fulltone DPDT switch in it now. What it's going to boil down to is the better deal ($).

Re: Area-51 Wah Parts

ya the search function doesn't always work. Those Area 51 wah's sound as if they must be awesome.

Re: Area-51 Wah Parts

Apparently. I never heard of them before. I was just searching Google for wah parts and they came up. At first I was thinking of just getting a new wah altogether but then figured, what the heck, I've modded my GCB-95 already, all it needs really is the pot change and a new inductor and it's good to go.

Re: Area-51 Wah Parts

Ya, Erik get one of their inductors. I'm curious if it is much better than the Dunlop Fasals. I'll be waiting for your review. :)

Re: Area-51 Wah Parts

Sure, go ahead and push me in that direction....LOL. Funny thing, before I came back in this thread, I had filled out the order for an inductor and pot from Area 51...LOL. It's a bit more than the Fulltone pot and red Fasel from another source but from what I'm reading out there, it's worth it.

.........and I just submitted the order. :)

I won't be able to compare their inductor to the Dunlop Fasel since I don't have one. I've only heard the red Fasel messing with other wahs. I like it better than the yellow.

:bigok: from me on my Area 51 wah. 'nuff said!

Yeah, I kinda figured that after reading your review. Once I get the pot and inductor in my Crybaby I'll post up my own little review. In addition to the mods I did, I'm hoping those two changes will get it to where it needs to be. It sounds good now but the pot is just worn and scratches after sitting for a while. I've never tried other inductors with it so this will be a first.

Re: Area-51 Wah Parts

Well, today I'll have the parts. The postman actually tried to deliver them on Saturday but I missed him and they left a note on the door that we could pick it up at the post office on Monday between 10-5. Great, we both work, can't do it. Couldn't yesterday either. The wife is picking it up today as she has an interview close to home anyway. We have to sign for it because he shipped insured. I might be able to get them installed tonight, we'll see.

Re: Area-51 Wah Parts

You've tried the Area 51 inductors John?

No I was using alot of the Banzai Inductors, but they haven't been making and selling them for quite awhile..The last few I bought off a guy in NYC that winds to "Halo" specs and I've been very happy with em..They are about $15 less also...I would like to try the Area 51 inductors also...My fav is still the Fulltone, but you can longer buy them(reasonable)...They're like $50 now when you locate one...

Re: Area-51 Wah Parts

Confirmed....the wife has the package from Area 51. WOOHOO!!!!

I'll post a mini-review of how my wah sounds after the pot and inductor are installed.

Erik.....I'd like to try their inductors,so do tell myself and others what ya think on that? I use Fulltone pots and I'm not sure how much difference there'd be if you use a different pot and inductor together in your equation compared to what I use?

Re: Area-51 Wah Parts

Will do, John. To be honest, this will be the first pot/inductor swap I've done so all I'll have to immediately compare it to is what's there now...lol. I have played other wahs with other pots and inductors, like the Vox's and Crybaby's with red or yellow fasels, but that's it. Either way, I will share my thoughts.

I do alot of mods to the wahs, but I will say I don't care for either of the Dunlop Fasel inductors!

In mine I change the gain transistors, tweak the mids,Q etc....My wahs have gain adjustment and more gain and lowend etc...The idea is to get the wah alot more vocal and with a great sweep, but also have it be beefier, ballsier, and not thin and shrill sounding...

Re: Area-51 Wah Parts

Got 'em installed.

If you haven't ordered a new inductor and/or pot for your wah, do it now. Get 'em from Area 51. Holy auto censor these are great parts. The pot is very smooth, nice taper to it. HUGE improvement there.

The inductor made the biggest difference (obviously). The wah went from sounding really good after I modded it a few years back to sounding really great. I knew I had to change the inductor to get it where I wanted it but never got a replacement until now. I am very pleased with the Area 51 inductor.

It's total "Voodoo Chile" heel to toe. The heel-down position has that nice low growl to it but it's not muddy or too dark. The toe-down position cuts through nicely without being harsh at all. Rock it back and forth and it's 70's funk. It's like a different wah altogether. Can't wait to use it at band practice this weekend.
