at the risk of sounding like a noob...

Re: at the risk of sounding like a noob...

I picked up an interest in learning more about amps recently.

Tubes, solid-states, combos and well, 'not combos'. cabs, heads, speakers etc.
what do these mean?

thanks.
tubes = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_tube
vacuum tube technology. This technology has been superseded in all areas of industry and electronics (except for guitar amplifiers and high end hifi amplifiers) by the use of transistors due to their small size, increased reliability and much lower cost of production. tubes are preferred by many musicians over transistors due to their sonic characteristics.

solid state = a circuit that uses transistors instead of tubes
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transistor

combo = an amplifier where the amplifier and the speakers are integrated into the same cabinet

head = an amplifier where the speakers are housed in a separate cabinet.

speakers= http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_speaker

i cant work out if the OP is trolling or not, but i'll post this to help out in the interests of good karma.

a head is only the amplifier... no speakers...just a box with an amplifier in it.

Think of it this way. With a combo, meaning a combination of an amplifier and speakers (usually 1 or 2) in the one enclosure, if you wanted to change speakers, you would have to remove them from the chassis. With a head, you can mix and match it with just about any cab (meaning a speaker cabinet with no amplifier) as simply as switching over a speaker cable.

Geek alert.

The part of a combo with the speaker is a cab, too. Cassis refers only to the metal box (more like a tray) that the actual amplifier is built into. The box part of a head is also a cab containing the amplifier chassis.

In short...metal box with amp guts = chassis

Wooden box containing chassis, speakers, or both = cab.

I realize the part that holds the head chassis is a cabinet and the part that holds everything in the combo together is also a cabinet but it's just too confusing to describe to someone who we are trying to help differentiate from a standalone speaker cabinet. Chassis was the best I could think of.
