Avatar 2X12 cabinet speaker questions

I am looking at a new avatar cab that will be powered by a class A tube amp for rock and metal styles. I am looking for input on the celestion V30 versus the gh30. What are the strengths and weakness of these two speakers compared to one another? One other question about the cab, open or closed back? and why do you feel this way?

Re: Avatar 2X12 cabinet speaker questions

Metal? V30! There's a reason it's the industry standard.

That said, a lot of guys here really dig the GH30/V30 combo, but that will lower the wattage of the cabinet down a bit.

Re: Avatar 2X12 cabinet speaker questions

What tonal differences are there between the two? My understanding is that the V30 is a little more focused(articulate) where the g12h is a little looser. I think the closed back cab will give me more low end thump(chunk) and provide a more focused(articulate) attack. Do either of these speakers perform better in either type of cabinet back?

Re: Avatar 2X12 cabinet speaker questions

I'd go with closed back, but I really can't comment on the G12H. I just know that my Avatar 2x12 closed back with V30's sounds better than my old Rivera 4x12 with the same speakers.

Re: Avatar 2X12 cabinet speaker questions

Yeah, I am leaning toward a pair of the V30's but the idea of one of each seems to be popular.

Re: Avatar 2X12 cabinet speaker questions

Good Idea would be to mix them up. My buddy has a 412 from them V30s on the bottom and G12 on top. One of the Best cabs Ive heard

Re: Avatar 2X12 cabinet speaker questions

the only cab i still own is a 2x12 closed back with a v30/g12h combo. that means 60w safe power handling. it sounds great with any head ive run thru it.

Re: Avatar 2X12 cabinet speaker questions

A lot of people find the V30's upper-mid spike causes listener fatigue. The V30and G12H30 seem to complement each other well, with the H filling in some extra lows and smoothing out the mids. Closed back is the way to go for metal and metalish rock - open back would be too floppy.

Avatar has that combination on special all the time because so many people buy them, they can build them in advance and stock them.

Re: Avatar 2X12 cabinet speaker questions

I'm looking at getting an Avatar myself, the G212H Custom because I want closed back.

The speakers I'm interested in are the Eminence Texas Heats and Tonkers. Two of either one or one of each. Does anyone have experience or familiar with these speakers?

For the last, oh, I dunno, 10-15 years, I've been using my Music Man 4x12 which has 30-35 watt Alnico's in it. They are the original speakers. Clean as can be and can handle anything I throw at it.

Needless to say, I'm not sure what to get. The pair needs to be able to handle the amp (100 watt Marshall head), and be clean. I like my amp to do the work, minimal to no speaker breakup. I know I don't like the V30's.

Already got an email in to Avatar asking the same stuff but wanted to get some opinions from here too.

Edit: How about the Governor or Wizard?

Cool. I'd appreciate the word back on what you and your dad think about them.

Re: Avatar 2X12 cabinet speaker questions

a closed back cabinet will give a more focused and chunky bottom end presence. Whereas an open back will fill the room better. Avatar also has an option where they have a closed back cabinet with an oval shape cut in the back. Its the closest thing to having the best of both worlds.

Re: Avatar 2X12 cabinet speaker questions

Any more feedback on the Eminence speakers I mentioned in post #9?

V30 is a JB
G12H is a PAF

Thats the easiest way to explain them. Celestion site has clips.

Re: Avatar 2X12 cabinet speaker questions

I have a Avatar 4x12" and i did the mix. G12's on bottom V30's up top. I'm very happy with the cab. I feel like the G12's add that extra low-end thump that V30's can't do by themselves. It's pretty well known that these 2 were meant for each other. Overall i prefer the V30's over the G12's, but if you are getting more than one speaker these are a match made in heaven.

Nobody else has experience with Eminence speakers? This is hard to believe considering the range of musical tastes here and the amount of gear amongst everyone.

I'm curious about the Texas Heats and the Governor. Anybody?
