Awesome Steve Lukather quote from The Gear Page.

Re: Awesome Steve Lukather quote from The Gear Page.

You know what amps and gear are? They're clothes. Remember in Rainman when Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman wore matching suits? How about Twins with Danny Devito and the Governator. Again, matching suits. But it didn't make those guys look like eachother. They just matched. Should I always wear jeans and a Tee to every occasion, simply because I'll always look like me? Like "oh well, everyone will know it's me, so I'll just wear shorts to a funeral, or a suit to a baseball game."

Different amps are like different outfits. To further the analogy, some people don't look good in certain kinds of clothes. They look unnatural. Imagine Jerry Garcia in a tuxedo, or Al Di Meola in a tank top and shorts, or Eric Johnson in a girl's marching band unifo...wait, oh yeah he actually did that. :) The point is that we all want certain clothes in our wardrobe, and some clothes we think "that looks good on him, but I couldn't wear it."

Different tones are different tools. If I wonder what EVH or Luke is playing through, it's not because I want to be him, it's because I want to play MY licks through that tone. So the holier-than-thou attitude of "Don't worry about what I/they use because you won't sound like me" is a little narcissistic. I don't want to sound exactly like you, dude. I just want your sound in my wardrobe.
