AXE FX lead tones all the same?

Re: AXE FX lead tones all the same?

How about a Def Leppard or Joe Satrini cover. Those are the sounds I want to hear, not something experimental.

Note: These are iconic types of tones, so the AXE should be able to do them, right?

Here's what a search of 'Axe fx joe satriani' turned up on youtube.

And a search of 'axe fx def leppard' turned up this:

Re: AXE FX lead tones all the same?

Satriani cover well played, but the guitar has the wrong pickups, but its clear the axe can do satrani.

Still waiting to hear a boosted plexi sound. The def lep cover is played over the actual track so you hear the original guitars behind it. That clip doesnt sound authentic anyway.

Re: AXE FX lead tones all the same?

So what kind of divergence from the Marshall/Soldano/Mesa family are you looking for anyway? Satch and Vai are hi gain British. Def leppard was British. 90% of metal will either be covered from axefx programs or covered with application of a pedal in front of the axefx. If you're looking for specificity, join a user forum and download the patch someone has already developed.
I would sympathize if you were looking for the Swedish Buzzsaw setting, or Azagthoth's Heretic tone...maybe finding 3 days Graces HK tone may be hard. You probably won't find a ton of Sunn, Matamp etc tones either.
You're wanting vanilla, chocolate, strawberry or maybe orange sherbet and you're unhappy with the amount of vanilla seeds or the darkness of the chocolate here. Some of us want vinegar, rose water and dragonfruit ice cream and never expect to get it.

off u see did MRSAge, I m on tapa talk and auto correct is hating on me

Re: AXE FX lead tones all the same?

No, the boosted plexi tone is a staple of rock. Early Def Lep, Scorpions, etc, etc. Then there is hot mod marshall, Iron Maiden, Priest, etc, etc. I will have to do more digging to see if it can do these things. It may be that the marshall sound is greater than the sum of its parts.

Satch is a DS-1 into the clean of a marshall. Vai is Bogner or Legacy.

The wrong pickups? Really?

First guy was playing his ass off but what I meant was that the AXE wouldnt be exected to do authentic Satch because he didnt have a regular humbucker. Much of the tone comes from the guitar. BTW, I can play that song, so Satriani tones are important to me.

Re: AXE FX lead tones all the same?

And this guy goes through the factory presets from one of the older Firmware versions. Problem is, they have alot of effects going on, so the amp sims are masked to a certain extent, but it does go through quite a bit of stuff. It's broken up into several videos, so here's the direct link to the page with that playlist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaioXb3ewMU&list=PL15BC648E6F6858FB and the first video is embeded below:

Re: AXE FX lead tones all the same?

that metallica video was cool, thanks for posting

I also note that deftones is also using all axefx live and on their newest album which sounds stellar, not sure if axefx is used in this 2013 concert though with the cabs on stage, RE:

I remember watching an interview from last year where Stephen Carpenter said that he has been running nothing but the Axe for awhile.

Oh yeah, and I found another video. A decent rundown of various amp models:

Re: AXE FX lead tones all the same?

The AFX II can do a lot of things, investing in a frfr setup like the CLR stuff helps alot with it too. But sometimes you need volume(a lot of it) for certain tones to sound a particular way, so it might need to played loud & then recorded with a mic maybe. I'm just thinking out loud here.. In any case a lot of time will need to be dedicated to it in order for it to sound close to perfect. The big acts that are using it live might possibly have hired people to do the dialing in effort for them.

The Kemper is also intriguing. Aftermarket profiles of hard to get amps is great although a paid service still great nonetheless.

Anyways, Top-L if you only want a boosted plexi sound then wouldn't it be easier & probably cost wise the same to get a clone build + iso cab setup to cover that sound for recording? Unless space was a concern or the intention is to replace all amp & cabs with a modeller

Re: AXE FX lead tones all the same?

I don't know.....they sound different in this video.

This is the video I saw b4 making this thread. They sound like the same amp model with different EQ to me. Nothing fundamental was changing. Just because they call it a model of whatever doesnt mean it is.

However, if you take all the videos from all the people is showcases alot of versatility. It seems like everyone is able to coax a few tones from it.
