bass amps: tube, solid state or both?

Re: bass amps: tube, solid state or both?

While I am not a bass player - when I think about what I want from bass....I find it hard to believe they don't all want/dig solid state.

And I think a lot of the guitar tube sheep actually want solid state but refuse to say it for fear of harrassment.

you sir are a blasphemer and should be burned by hot glass!

believe me doc if i could get what i wanted from ss then i would. unless there is some magic ss tone machine i dont know about then im screwed

It's not an svt, but it's still an ampeg!

Cab only weighs 25 lbs. and the head is pure SS with 200w.

That's an 8ohm cab, and so you'd need two of them to make that amp do the full 200 watts; but how friggin' cool would that look on two cabs?

And this is why you're not the bass player. Tons of solid state amps have tubes in the preamp, cause lots of bass players want that fat, round warm tone, with a bit of growl, too.:cool2:

+1 Which is why I bought a svt 3 pro. I'll take to take a pic of my current bass rig later in the day. Other ppl posted theirs so why not. :D

Re: bass amps: tube, solid state or both?

My D-180 is all tube (6x6l6) and I love it. It's heavy and not very powerful but the tone is right where it needs to be.

Some solid state bass amps are great but others just don't do it for me.

Re: bass amps: tube, solid state or both?

I had my SVT, and still have some tube bass heads, an Acoustic 370, some old, but reliable PV's, but for the past 5 years have used a reasonable weight GK 1001RB. Not my favorite amp but too convenient to not use.

Re: bass amps: tube, solid state or both?

I've heard a pretty kickass solid state bass tone in my lifetime. still, if it were up to me, I'd go tube. SVT.

Re: bass amps: tube, solid state or both?

Soild state for me was to thin not enough bottom end to fill a closet much less a room. Now hybrid on the other hand are not bad at all, you get plenty of thick tone and bottom end. But really the best is a all tube head, but like I said carrying it is a mother lol.

Re: bass amps: tube, solid state or both?

Hey Reggie
I have been reading a little on the "new" Acoustic stuff , it doesn't seem half bad at all.

Re: bass amps: tube, solid state or both?

this is the right amp for just about everything

+1 I'd always get compliments from sound guys on how good the tone was. I have it paired with a 4x10 ported ampeg cab, so it's a mean ol' mofo on the low end. More than enough power for a small to mid size venue. The ampeg B2-RE is is like a cheaper version of the svt 3 pro and it sounds just as good to my ears. The pro just has more stuff to play around with so you can really dial in your tone. I saw a B2-re one of ebay for $300 and you'd still have cash for a 2x10.

Re: bass amps: tube, solid state or both?

I'm going to use one for a blues jam every week, so no hard rock for it just yet.

I was a bit worried that they made the speaker out in series, but that just means you can use any extension cab. The wattage with a 4ohm would go to around 165 or so with another cab, but you'll at least double the speaker cone area, so it's gonna be a bit louder just for that. From all the great reviews it gets, it should do the job I need.

It definitely is a good option. I was just saying that most people only comment on how great the vintage vibe bass thing is, but it is a really versatile amp. For a blues jam it should be perfect!

Good luck :beerchug:

Re: bass amps: tube, solid state or both?

Im not a bass player but I like bass sounds to be clear but still smooth and fat (I don't like the modern hard hitting/attacking bass sounds as much as smoother vintage tones) although I don't like overally distorted tones I think if I was a bass player or was investing in a bass amp to record I'd get a hybrid with a mixable ss/tube front end

Re: bass amps: tube, solid state or both?

When I play bass I like to play thorugh big tube guitar amps...Dusty Hill, Ronnie Wood, Jack Bruce style...you know, Plexi Marshalls, Dual Showmans, big Ampegs...etc...

However for most bass players SS is the ticket...

Re: bass amps: tube, solid state or both?

Following on from post #28, yesterday, I made some DI recordings through my TC Electronic Staccato '51 amp head. It made one of my Seymourised budget Yamaha bass guitars sound utterly professional and made my Chapman Stick sound thunderously deep and clear.

If it's good enough for Rocco Prestia, it's "Ampeg" enough for me.

Re: bass amps: tube, solid state or both?

Neither.

Direct to a good PA.

I can load-in with a gig bag.

:D

Re: bass amps: tube, solid state or both?

I love both... But I just remembered an experience I had with a Trace Elliot V8 through a Bergantino NV610. Glorious sounds to be had.
