Bass Pickups

I have been asked which pickups would give a better bottom end (below 200Hz) on a Yamaha RBX270. Although I work on guitars I fully admit I know little about bass pickups, I rarely get a bass guitar to work on and rather than waffle about it I thought I'd be better asking those who are in the know.

Re: Bass Pickups

As with guitar pickups, it'd depend on the player's preferred style and tonal goals: You want a classic 60s Motown sound from the Jazz and Country thump from the P? Maybe more of a Jaco Jazz tone and Iron Maiden punch from the P? Chili Peppers slap-n-pop with a bluesy moan?

Granted I'm no expert on bass pickups - haven't even gotten into swapping the stock pickups in my basses - but I've been digging into them lately, and those are the questions I ask myself - and have no answers other than "Yes"

Sadly there's no Sound Clips on the site for the bass pickups :(

I'd love to hear the differences between a quarter pounder set (P+J) and various other sets.

Re: Bass Pickups

I'm having a similar issue. I got my Ibanez (P/J) GSR200 back over the weekend from a one month loan. The P-pickup is dead and the output jack is trashed, so I was just going to gut the electronics. It's the same as the one linked except its a passive v/v/t setup.

I'm much more of a six stringer and don't have much relevant experience with bass pickups. I've also installed them for other people, but that doesn't make me any kind of expert on the topic either.

Re: Bass Pickups

a qp p bass pup has a very deep full low end

one of my favorite setups is the qp p bass with a hot jazz bridge

Re: Bass Pickups

Just to say I handed the guitar over today and he's delighted with it. SPB-3 at the neck & STK-J2b at the bridge, rewired with quality pots in the conventional P/J set up, originally had a master volume, blend and tone. Now has much more bottom end just as he wanted.
