i love the low b, especially since i use seven string guitars as well so i need to keep up with the bass. But as a six-string player i also love the high c :)

Depends. If you need the extended range, go 5. If you don't really need that, stick with 4. Do you do a lot of downtuning or play a 7-string? If you don't, there's really no need for a 5-string.

I love the low B. Hitting that lower octave every once in a while is awesome, plus I'm all for floor-rumbling bass.

Re: Bass Players: 4 or 5 strings?

I don't play bass but a friend does. Lately I've been converting to the 5 string (and dare I say it, 6 string) bass world...as in accepting it.

Re: Bass Players: 4 or 5 strings?

I prefer a 6-string because it's great to have that higher range when they point at you to take a solo. The low B is a must in a keyboard-based band because everything's in C, Db and Eb.

5 strings: The neck is more comfortable and I need the range anyway.

Re: Bass Players: 4 or 5 strings?

lol, if all of us in the thread so far ran the world, 4 strings wouldn't exist :laugh2:

Re: Bass Players: 4 or 5 strings?

I like 4 strings, I play bass in jazz band. a 5th string would totally slow me down... The neck on my bass is nice and narrow.

Never played a 5 string bass i liked.

Re: Bass Players: 4 or 5 strings?

I really only have experience with 4-string basses. I thought about getting a 5 string but I don't have a problem with 4. For what I mainly play, I don't really need a B string. However, my bass is tuned a half step down and sometimes I drop the the D# to C#.

Re: Bass Players: 4 or 5 strings?

I've got a 5 string stingray...and I still think back and wish I'd gotten the 4 string instead. the 5th is nice sometimes, but it's just extra baggage that isn't necessary. You don't need 5 strings to sound great...

Jaco, Flea, Wooten...all of them get it done, in style, and on a four string....4's all you need baby

Re: Bass Players: 4 or 5 strings?

I still don't understand the reasoning for not getting a 5 if you're using standard you know. I guess I just appreciate the extra range. I won't ever get a 6 again and keep it in E standard, I'd get a 7.

Re: Bass Players: 4 or 5 strings?

if you wanna go low, just tune the whole ****er down. i would never buy a 5 stringed bass or a seven stringed guitar.

Re: Bass Players: 4 or 5 strings?

For 13 years, same thing...4 strings. I owned a 5 string for about a year, and it was hardly ever played...sold.

Re: Bass Players: 4 or 5 strings?

5 strings are have comfy necks, and I like the extra range. But I like 4 strings better for some reason, guess I just dont like the B hanging there.
