Basswood vs. Mahogany

Re: Basswood vs. Mahogany

I built a guitar because I had a block of Honduran mahogany. Had that block been basswood, i wouldn't have bothered.

But if you had, you probably would have built a hell of a guitar out of it.

Re: Basswood vs. Mahogany

I am making a guitar out of locally grown paulownia which would be an even cheaper alternative to basswood. And despite peoples gripes its resonate and full of life. :headbang:

**** i say if mother nature provided it as a tonewood it must be worth trying.

Re: Basswood vs. Mahogany

Didn't Fender make some guitars with pine bodies in the 50's?

Yes, and pine is a great body wood. Same with oak. Just they aren't used because:

a) People have settled already for the popular "tonewoods"
b) Pine and oak have the "cheap" stigma
c) People have never played either, and automatically come to the conclusion it must be bad if it isn't popular
d) Pine in some cases may be too soft, and oak at time too heavy. Both would also take more time/effort/money to finish than Poplar or Alder. On the contrary, oak and ash or mahogany take just as much time to fill/finish.

I've actually seen oak basses at my local Sam Ash. It sounded as good as it played/looked (which was nice).

Re: Basswood vs. Mahogany

^^I built a guitar out of oak once. It was free so I guess it can't be any cheaper than that. Very, very bright if you like that. Not light weight by any means.

Re: Basswood vs. Mahogany

I found it bright as well, but not stupidly bright. Very usable, and reminded me somewhat of the type of character of an SG.

Re: Basswood vs. Mahogany

Not to mention this thread was posted on the SD FB page.

Now the whole world knows about our special maniac.
Yeah I know I seen it.
Talking about tone woods not normally seen. My V is made of Teak and it resonates very very well. Teak is found in abundance here. And all the mass produced Indian solid body guitars I have come across use it (bad guitars). There is one luither down south of India who uses it for custom builds with great results.

How does the teak sound? There's alot of the stuff here in Indonesia too. From what I know Teak is a very hard wood one of the best woods to make furniture with cause it's almost indestructible , and I guess the grain is pretty good too. My only concern with it is its very very heavy, maybe too heavy for geetars.

Re: Basswood vs. Mahogany

Well teak is great for furniture very very strong, and termite resistance is great and takes abuse very well. I have a teak made ladder here in my small businesses premises and I can tell you it is freaking strong. My sofa is made of teak and so are the church pews. It is a bit heavy too though my guitar is light (may be because it is very thin). Most of the guitars made of teak I played sounded at the most OK , but they were all beginners guitars with bad hardware and pickups. There are a lot of diff species too. And yes it is heavy.

Make it semi-hollow or full-on hollow and try it! I think it is a good idea to try any woods available and unconventional. You never know what you'll find, which is extremely fun.

Two teak guitars I played were very good both, made by a local luither, with pickups he wound himself. Maybe the personnel touch counted a lot. I must say the specie of teak out here in India and surrounding South East Asia would be diff then what is in the US. An internet friend of mine swears by his custom made Neck through Teak LP, he is on this forum too but rarely post.

Paulownia is pretty awesome. I had about 20 Dean Vendettas at one point made of Paulownia. Just got tired of filling in the neck humbucker cavities and switched to Strats for a bit. :D

20? say what! :notworthy

Man i have honestly never heard a solid body that was so resonate, I showed my mate last night and he couldn't believe it either. When you strum it ''unplugged'' and put your ear to the wood it sounds like an acoustic. It rings for 30-40 seconds and is like none of my other 16 guitars.

Ahh, I had 17 total. Here's the first 11:

Re: Basswood vs. Mahogany

I'm happy to have a basswood guitar in my arsenal and truly desire to add mahogany as well, definitely room for both in my house.
