Benedettos--Don't see them talked about much

Re: Benedettos--Don't see them talked about much

I think I speak for the lion's share of the board when I say, "What's a Benedetto?"

Re: Benedettos--Don't see them talked about much

How many members of this board play Jazz on an 17'' archtop? ;)

Re: Benedettos--Don't see them talked about much

Benny pickups are probably most used by benny players. Bennys are expensive axes and really only appeal to a pretty select type of player.

Exactly. Which is the polar opposite of the demographic frequented in this Forum.

FWIW, I frequent a Jazz guitar Forum, and Benedetto Pickups are seldom named, let alone being used. This particular demograhic is hopelessly indoctrinated by the Gibson brand, and would rather change a several thousand bucks instrument with another than changing pickups. Many of them won't even change strings themselves!

i can speak for one....

...oh wait...16"

*I* can speak for one... although no Benedettos on my part either; Gertrude hosts an A3n/a2b modded Jazz set. Tone for days and then some! :cool2:

Then again... I'm not your average Jazz player. ;) I've started this Smooth Jazz project in 2012; before I've played mainly British Blues and '70s Rock as an amateur, as a pro I've played almost every style of music there is under the sun.

LtKojak, I thought perhaps some of these pickups might be valid alternatives for pickups such as Seth Lovers, some of the Ants, and maybe more vintage voiced offerings like the Jazz and 59.

You make it sound like there's a dress code required just to play them. Too rich for the blood of this unruly lot. ;)

Hi,

[waves]

They are another take on a lower output PAF style humbucker. Try them. I'm sure the seymour duncan exchange policy applies to them. If Seymour is involved, I'm sure they sound good. No one can tell you if they are going to sound good to you though.

Just in case:
If it is the specs you are looking at, I say try it.

If it is the black nickel cover you are attracted you, you can order any seymour duncan humbucker with that cover.

Enjoy,

~LD

Re: Benedettos--Don't see them talked about much

a friend of mine is an archtop builder and hes used the a6 and s6. they are increadible sounding pups. even and clear across the whole guitar, full but not tubby or honky. never heard any of the others.

im not sure they fall under the duncan exchange policy or not

Re: Benedettos--Don't see them talked about much

In the "incredibly clear and detailed pickup for jazz" category, I should also recommend the Bartolini 1C & 1CTA (the Tuck Andress signature model), plus their Jazz & Vintage PAF sets. Incredibly detailed pickups - a lot of body tone and inner voicings of your chords make it through.

Re: Benedettos--Don't see them talked about much

When we worked with Bob Benedetto to make these pickups, it was really interesting because the voicing was coming from a luthier, not a pickup builder. Bob is often considered the world's top archtop builder and he prides himself on the acoustic timbre of his instruments. He wants a magnetic pickup to be as transparent and as articulate as possible, allowing as much of the wood to be heard, with as little influence as possible from the pickup. That's the idea for the S series, B series, and A series. For the P.A.F., he wants it still to be transparent, but more like a traditional Gibson humbucker.

Re: Benedettos--Don't see them talked about much

i have them on my benedetto bambino , i think they are very underrated , would never change them out , great jazz pickups

Re: Benedettos--Don't see them talked about much

Evan, thanks much for the official response.

I use quite a few lower output pickups even as a rock player, and the clearness you described appeals to me. While I didn't like a 57 Classic in the neck (too muddy), I do use a 57+ in the neck.

Would you recommend using them in place of any of the regular production pickups I mentioned (59, Jazz, Seths, etc.), or should they only be used for archtop Jazz?

Re: Benedettos--Don't see them talked about much

Personally, I would say "Give 'em a shot, but be prepared to be extremely clean in your playing. These are pickups designed to show off extremely technical playing, and will show off every single note - whether you wanted it to be there or not. Flubbed notes will be as crystal clear as the stuff you want to show off."

For example:

Personally, I think the guy needs to switch to flatwounds, but that may just be me... he's the one with the recording contract...

jtougas, thanks! Wow, those are clean.

Were these ever adapted into an acoustic guitar sound hole pickup?

I don't like a lot of acoustic magnetic pickups because they're kind of brittle in the highs. These aren't. It's like there's not even a pickup there.
