What do you guys recommend? I want warm, mellow sounds, sub £500 (so I guess below $800), happy to go secondhand.

I think he meant a big, Wes Montgomery hollowbody, not a more BB King Hollowbody.
Try the Artcores though. They're not all bad.

You mean you think he meant a full hollow and not a semi-hollow, right?
Ibanez Artcore and Gretsch Electromatics are what I'd look at if I wanted a full hollow for under $1,000.

Not saying that, but with Jazzbox the usual connotation is a large bodied, full hollow guitar like those seen with Wes or Charlie Christian.

I have a full hollow Ibanez AF75. It is such a cool guitar. Trapeze tailpice, tune-o-matic style bridge, low output ceramic humbuckers. With heavy distortion, it gets some feedback, but when that feedback is avoided (lowering volume, lowering fuzziness, standing somewhere else), the tones are great.

I've actually tried these, and they're really nice guitars. Of course, having never tried a guitar with a bridge that wasn't bolted to the body, I was a little surprised when the bridge moved when I touched it, but I guess that's to be expected. It's a really nice guitar, definetely worth checking out.
I haven't tried one, but I like the looks of these Godin "5th Avenue" guitars:

For fully hollow, I like the Washburn J3 (same dimensions as an ES175), Ibanez AF75 & AF105, and the P-90 Epi Casino (ES330).
For semi-hollow my favorites are: Epi Sheraton, Dot, Dot Deluxe, Riviera, Riviera P-93 (triple P-90's), and the Hamer Echotone. These models have a Gibson 335 dimension body.
All of these have rich, warm tones and will play jazz & blues very well (many great players over the decades have used these guitar designs). The semi-hollows also do classic rock as they don't have the feedback issues at higher volumes.
Look for a deal on used guitars, and maybe you can get both a semi & full hollow.

I have an ibanez Artcore AK86. I like this guitar a lot. i got it used for 330 bucks in a music store. It plays very nice. I just oiled the neck and put 12-56s on. I'm going to replace the pickups in it soon. Its a very nice guitar indeed. I expect it to be my long time friend.

+1. Upgrading PU's will give you some nice tones. No need to spend a fortune.

Thanks for the advice guys...by a strange twist of fate I spotted a 1988 Orville by Gibson 335 on Ebay being sold by a guy who lives a mile away. The trigger had to be pulled and I got it today.
