Hey, i'm new to home recording on the computer so I started looking into it and found out I need either a mic pre, a mixer, or a professional sound card. Now from what I understand since a mixer has a few channels, it'll be more expensive than a mic pre in the same quality.
So if i'm going for a mic pre, i'll need a good sound card to plug into or the quality will suffer, but that's extra money getting a mic pre and a sound card as well.
So I figured out that for my budget (50$-100$) i'll need either a mic pre with usb out so I wouldn't need a sound card, or a good soundcard with built in pre and an xlr input. I've also read somewhere that usb out pre aren't that good.
What do you guys suggest?

Thanks guys, but I asked for 50$ to 100$ suggestions.

Re: Best Cheapest Home Recording Solution?

yeah... the best solutions are pod xt or toneport...

if you cant afford that then, you should probably save up until you do and get something worthwhile.

Just a thought.

Re: Best Cheapest Home Recording Solution?

I went on the same search a few years back. The Rifftracker package w/ tone port really is the cheapest practical way to get started. I ended up spending enough on adaptors and converter cables to pay for it, and the little that I was able to record with the free audacity software program ended up sounding like crap. They are correct, save your money.

What about usb mic preamps? Or pro soundcards?

Not in your price range, if you can find one used then possibly. You said $50-100 dollars so you pretty much ruled out like 95% of recording gear.

Honestly man for that little about all you can do is buy a cheap little mixer and run it line input to your soundcard and find some free recording program. It's honestly hardly worth it so just save up.

Well i've heard some of Dirrty Craig's recordings with the Splawn and they sounded pretty good for a cheap mixer that connects to usb. Maybe I should get something like that?
