Best chimey sounding humbuckers!?

Opinions on best clean and chimey sounding humbuckers - preferred neck possition.

Currently I have an Alnico Pro neck, in and Epiphone 339 (smaller bodied 335). Just wondering if there might be something brighter that could bring out the accousticness of the guitar?

Ive been playing with it unplugged a bit to try get a sound for its natural unamplified sound. It sounds a bit like a banjo in a way..

Thoughts?

Re: Best chimey sounding humbuckers!?

The most chimey that I know of would be the Phat Cat or Benedetto. There's also the Seth, Ant, or you could swap an A5 into your A2P making it a Jazz.

Re: Best chimey sounding humbuckers!?

the jazz model is pretty bright and chimey, which is why i dislike it. dimarzio ej custom and humbucker and hell are also very chimey

Re: Best chimey sounding humbuckers!?

you could also wire the pickup in parallel. humbuckers in parallel always sound very acoustic-like to me

Re: Best chimey sounding humbuckers!?

The Jazz is my second favorite humbucker- and it chimes. I don't really think parallel 'chimes' for most pickups, it sort of just squawks.

Re: Best chimey sounding humbuckers!?

You can try a magnet swap for your APH-1. Unoriented A5 is likely to go in the direction towards bright and clear. If that is not bright enough, then a regular polished A5 magnet will turn the APH-1n into a SH-2n Jazz.

Re: Best chimey sounding humbuckers!?

Antiquities should be in the running, too. The acoustic chimey thing happens especially because they aren't potted, so they are microphonic. They are really great in semi-hollows.

Ive seen this written a lot on this forum - that an APH-1 with a mag swap to Alnico 5 is a SH-2.
Is this true!?

Re: Best chimey sounding humbuckers!?

yes. if you have a jazz (with alnico V) and swap it for an alnico 2, you get the alnico2pro. that's absolutely true. while on the subject:

custom 5 =/= fullshred with different polepieces.

jb =/= distortion =/= invader =/= black winter

However: those winds are very SIMILAR. Not exactly the same, very similar.

on topic: phat cat in neck? chimey? imho, hell no.

If you want chime, go to Bill Lawrence. That L500C in the neck position is super chimey. Otherwise I'd go with the fullshred neck. or even better:

jazzN/59N Hybrid. That pickup is so chimey, glassy and flutey, it's like having a singlecoil at times.too bad SD won't make one. you gotta do it yourself.

Re: Best chimey sounding humbuckers!?

Wiring the A2P for series/parallel with a push pull pot will make it kind of quacky versus chimey. I'd try adjusting the pole pieces first to get a little more out of it, then if it's not enough swap in an alnico 5 magnet so you've got a Jazz neck. It sounds like you're looking really for a Jazz neck sound.

Re: Best chimey sounding humbuckers!?

'59 neck is very chimey if you set the height correctly (pretty low). You can get it to ring out almost like an acoustic. If you have it too close to the strings it's very boomy though.

Re: Best chimey sounding humbuckers!?

I have a pretty wide variety of neck pickups in my guitars Sentient, Jazz, APH1, APH2, SNS and Full Shred. If I had to call one of them "chimey", it would be the Full Shred in my Kauer Banshee (firebird style with humbuckers). It sounds pretty solid with the clean settings I normally use on my Mesa Road King, very full and lush. However, I can throw some dirt on it and still get nice definition when we do we do Shine by Collective Soul. I can't tell you if it will do what you want, all I can tel you is what I do with it.

Re: Best chimey sounding humbuckers!?

Very low wind, unpotted, plenty of scatter. One of the boutique winders could make you one.

Zhangbucker is a member here, and he's the only one I know of nowadays who'll still make actual handwound coils on request. Not hand-fed onto a machine, mind you - literally hand-wound, every wrap done by hand. I have two and they're amazing. Extra airy, could really help bring out the acoustic character in a semihollow.

ReWind is another great winder - specializes in PAF types; James deserves his excellent reputation and his low output neck hums are wonderful. He also offers a rod mag pickup in a humbucker-sized housing, even with dummy pole screws if desired. Not humbucking, but bright and less bark than a P90. Check his website.

In a mechanically wound pickup, the old Gibson Shaw humbuckers are nice and chimey. They average around 7K and the secret sauce was UA5 mags, the first production humbucker to use them AFAIK.

As for more affordable modern options yes, the Jazz is crisp and the Antiquity is quite open sounding. And the 59N can chime nicely if set up right, especially with an A4 or UA5 mag. Any of these would likely be an improvement over the stock Epi humbuckers.

Or for full singlecoil chime, use a real Strat pickup. There are adapter plates to mount one in a humbucker rout, and at the neck you probably wouldn't require a lot of extra height. Again, not humbucking but extra chimey.

Of course, your 339 still won't ever really chime like a Strat, but this would be close as you really could hope to get.

No, the winds are exactly the same. 16.6k. As long as they all use the same gauge wire, and they do, it’s the same number of turns on the bobbin.

They just change the magnet and pole pieces. That affects the inductance.

^ Incorrect about the pups being the same and incorrect about the only factors contributing to pickup sound.

Re: Best chimey sounding humbuckers!?

@davidravenmoon you're funny. Believe me.... they're not the same winds.

Jesus Christ that is just... Ugh

You couldn't find two same-number-of-turn pickups with the exact same DCR

Let's not even get into wind patterns that technically have the "same" number if turns

It can be done. :P

Re: Best chimey sounding humbuckers!?

I just finished wiring a Epiphone Sheritan with Seth Lovers. Sounds great! A nice Jazz guitar. The fretboard is very flat on this guitar not sure it would be great for bends!
To be honest the difference between the Seths and Alnico Pros is a very subtle difference! I would probably pick the APH-1 over the Seths as an all-rounder. I also really like the Jazz neck pups - I have one in my S2 PRS semi-hollow - sounds glassy!
I'm yet to try any Antiquity - Im curious about thwm.. so they have aged magnets AND ages pole pieces!?
