The top 2210 head, modded to AB763 Fender cleans and Marshall OD..... sort of an "off the beaten path" approach..... but it's exactly what you described.

Mr. Seal - TELL US ABOUT THAT MARSHALL ABOVE

and, I could get a Shiva if I sold some stuff off. Only thing is, I covet some of the things I have at the moment.

Although its not related to this post - I have fallen in love with MIDI on guitars.

The new Kasha Amplifiers 50w 3 chanel head or their Rockmod preamp. It's as baddazz as it gets! It's all the buzz in the LA studio scene right now. I've played it a few times. I'm on the list to get one. The prototype has been floating around and all ready on a ton of big records coming out. Production is ramping up. The clean chanel can be configured like a blackface Fender or ultra clean with absolutlely no breakup, which is how I have my Rockmod preamp set. The burn (lead) channel can be so over the top it's silly, and the crunch chanel can get you any variation of crunch you can think of. Not too mention a slew of other features not available on any other amp.

Re: Best Clean amp that has a wicked distortion channel

I have a Shiva, and I think the cleans on these are very Plexi like. Certainly not as harmonically rich as a Plexi, but the cleans are very impressive. I think they could rival a Plexi with the right speakers (4 greenbacks or V30's). The Drive channel is very impressive also. I have a MArshall 900 and the Bogner just flat out smokes the Marshall. More gain than I will ever use. I suppose it comes down to what you are looking for and what type of musice you plan to use it for. I play Blues and Classic Rock. It works very well for me.

Marshall DSL401.

Surprisingly the clean channel is VERY good.

The overdrive channel is good too if you put the treble VERY low.

I agree that the 401 has an amazing clean channel. The EL84's make it bright (in a good way) and chimey. I haven't found the dirty channel to be overly bright, however. Mine actually sounds best with the gain, treble, mid, and bass controls all the way up. Go figure. Marshalls all sound different.
Another great and very pedal-friendly clean channel is on my Rivera M100. Gorgeous clean sound and a righteous dirty channel.

Clean matters most.
An amp where the distortion doesn't sound like junk. Some real crunch.
Good Day All...First Time Poster Here.

I use a Rivera Suprema...Great clean & dirty channels :smokin:

In case you were not aware, I am an amp tech/builder...That particular Marshall as well as this one (owned by forum member Jeff_H)...

has been converted to PTP using a Fender Twin circuit for clean...(not "close to", but exact!) and a Marshall OD circuit. It works flawlessly, and the same results can be achieved with a Fender chassis (Twin, Showman, ...etc) just make sure there are 5 or more 12ax7's and enough existing holes in the front panel for all the controls you want....I do NOT drill holes in amps!

The 2210/2205/4210/4211's ch. switching JCM800's already have all the hardware for two channels plus reverb which makes them a really great choice for a "mod" platform.

I don't "settle" for what is available, I make exactly what I want!.......that sounded conceited, didn't it?

"Mods" can be great, if there is nothing else that will achieve what you're after, but choose wisely!

I'll see if I can get some clips up this weekend....:)

Yeah, all Marshalls are different.

Running it 10/10/10 on the EQ, because it's passive, means you are pretty much bypassing the EQ. Or very close to bypassing it. Passive tone controls are just cut knobs.

The clean channel is another story - it has an active EQ so 5/5/5 would be techically the "flat" setting.

those links dont work! come on!

Oh yea, and the DSL 401 does sound wicked on the clean chan. I dimed it all the time and it sounded great for blues, i wont forget that amp.
Rock on, brotha :smokin: I like to dime the clean channel too.

The overdrive channels just don't sound good until you get the amp up to a half decent volume, that's the one drawback of a DSL401. It's hard to do the 3-in-the-morning-everyone's-in-bed kinda thing.

Re: Best Clean amp that has a wicked distortion channel

Keeping in mind that I haven't tried any boutique amps like Bogners and such, the best I've heard that fits the bill is the Peavey JSX. IMO, it has better cleans than any (stock) Marshalls or Mesas I've heard, and the other channels can get some really good overdrive.

After hearing a Jeff Seal modded amp, there's no doubt in my mind that the one he posted will do what you're looking for and more. :headbang:
