Best Duncan for modern metal in mahogany?

Re: Best Duncan for modern metal in mahogany?

Custom for E or D tunings

Distortion for C or B tunings

Full Shred for B, A or even lower tunings

I think the Custom will sound too fat in that guitar of yours. I dropped one in my Ibanez Saber a while ago (super thin body + tremolo) and it made that skinny thing sound incredibly huge!

The Distortion is the perfect choice for you! It's amazing in warm sounding guitars with fixed bridges and has a really good tightness in lower tunings. It sounds very angry and aggressive so it's not for everyone (but you're not a wimp, are you? ;)) I am the proud owner of one of those beasts and use it for brutal downtuned madness where both punch and precision are required. I also really like it for soloing since it has a very nice and distinctive character.

The Full Shred is one of the tightest (and brightest) humbuckers ever so it's the perfect choice for thrash and really low tunings.

Custom/ 59 hybrid. That way if you play clean you get a pretty good sound as well.

Re: Best Duncan for modern metal in mahogany?

Thats cool i can understand if you dont care for the stock JB, to each his own but the other guy plain out said it sucks? It definitely does not! :)

When i said it sucks, that's just my opinion. If you like it and it works for you then awesome- after all, anything is better than EMG's :)
Seriously though, i have used the JB and it's super harsh and yet really loose at the same time, but that's my opinion. I'm just a moron with Internet access, if you like it, you like it. I just happen not to.

I had a custom in my old guitar tuned to drop b. it was huge, i can agree with that. Not a fan of dd though, IMO they're almost as harsh as the JB.

Re: Best Duncan for modern metal in mahogany?

I think it's right in the grey area, personally I would wonder if I care more about clarity or power. If it was something like drop A, I'd say Full Shred all the way.

Clarity all the way. The main reason i don't like the DD is that's it's really hot, hotter than a custom or full shred. I wouldn't want anything hotter than a custom or full shred. But at the same time a 59 or a Jazz wouldn't cut it either.

Re: Best Duncan for modern metal in mahogany?

I can't think of anything better for downtuning and metal than a Distortion. Seriously, nothing.

Re: Best Duncan for modern metal in mahogany?

TB-5 Duncan Custom.

It'll be just fine at C, B, A, etc.

Re: Best Duncan for modern metal in mahogany?

for mahogany, Full Shred. more focused lows.

haven't played a Dimebucker, but it's an interesting choice and the numers work.

Re: Best Duncan for modern metal in mahogany?

I think the Custom vs. the Distortion is just a matter of taste as both can do it. I've used both for down tuning and I switched back to the Custom as I just prefer its tone overall. But both are great pick ups, it's just preference.

Re: Best Duncan for modern metal in mahogany?

the full shred and the custom are the same or similar wind, just more articulation on the full shred from the hexes and A5. full shred with a ceramic is a more defined custom.

I have been using an alt 8 in my drop C les paul, any lower i would go full shred/custom.

the JB does indeed suck, no balls at all.

So would you reccomend putting a ceramic in a full shred, because I'm definitely going for the custom or full shred.

Re: Best Duncan for modern metal in mahogany?

I've down tuned a full step with the El Diablo and it keeps its edge. But I'm going to jump on the Custom/59 hybrid on this one because it has a lot of snap to it so it should keep tight at lower tunings.
