Fresh Cream, Disrali Gears and Wheels of Fire...all by Cream.

Are You Experianced, Axis and Electric Ladyland...Jimi Hendrix

Truth...Jeff Beck

If you don't have 'em, you should.

How is Truth compared to Blow By Blow? I only have Who Else? and Guitar Shop. Guitar Shop has a little too many synths in it for me...

Along with all of the above:

Y&T--Black Tiger
Scorpions--Virgin Killer, Blackout
Alice in Chains--Dirt
Rush--Anything between 1975 & 1982, especially "2112".

Re: best heavy metal album release?

For Megadeth, I'd recommend almost anything from the catalog... except Countdown to Extinction. For hardcore 'deth check out Peace Sells, So Far, So Good, So What!, or Rust in Peace. For more of a rock sound, check out Youthanasia and Cryptic Writings.

How were they live? We always wondered if the singer could pull his own weight out of the studio.

Puts a whole new complexion on 'breaking it big', doesn't it...

OH YES!!!! A non-Aussie who knows Rose Tattoo!!!! Nice to see. Great underrated real hard rock band. Rob Riley was awesome!! I've played a few of their tracks before in bands- always goes down well!!!

Re: best heavy metal album release?

Oh - I'd also suggest some Budgie. Their early stuff is pretty bloody heavy for the time, but also really interesting. Songs like Parents, Breaking all the House Rules and Breadfan are pretty good early heavy rock songs

I know some of you are thinking 'Why are these old bastards recommending all this old sh*t - this isn't metal' - If you like a genre, it's important to understand it's roots - and these guys (Sabbath, Beck's 'Truth' album, Cream, Budgie etc etc) are the roots of metal...

Why do you think us old guys who were influenced by Thin Lizzy, Led Zep etc etc, also listened to a lot of blues stuff - coz it was the roots of that sort of music...

Re: best heavy metal album release?

must gets:
opeth - Still Life
Dream Theater - Metropolis pt2 Scenes from a memory

Re: best heavy metal album release?

Since newer metal has come up, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Dimmu Borgir, Children of Bodom, or In Flames...

check out:
Dimmu Borgir - Death Cult Armageddon
Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder
In Flames - Colony

Re: best heavy metal album release?

Dokken - Tooth and Nail
Dio - The Last in Line
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Accept - Metal Heart

Re: best heavy metal album release?

Slayer - Haunting the Chapel
Slayer - Hell Awaits
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Slayer - South of Heaven
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
Slayer - Diabolus in Musica
Slayer - God Hates Us All

Re: best heavy metal album release?

Countdown is very stereotypical early 90s radio metal. It's a decent album, but not even close to Megadeth's full potential. I've owned the album since about 1997 and I haven't listened to it in the last 2 years or so. I'd much rather listen to Rust in Peace or Youthanasia.
