Best heavy metal album of all time: Metallica's St. Anger.
Nothing even comes close.
ha. maybe if that's the only music you've ever listened to in you whole life. if you can find it, try to get some axel rudi pell - the masquerade ball. real solid metal.

OH YES!!!! A non-Aussie who knows Rose Tattoo!!!! Nice to see. Great underrated real hard rock band. Rob Riley was awesome!! I've played a few of their tracks before in bands- always goes down well!!!

I love Rose Tattoo and the Peter Wells Band too. Also a big fan of Angel City, I know a few guys here are, Sykes for one. I'll have to add Beyond Salvation to the list, their most "metal" release.

Re: best heavy metal album release?

Hey Chris; I don't know a lot of metal, but one group that I do like a lot, (that I think is metal), is Type O Negative. The CD "October Rust" is great. The songs actually have melody, and the singer has a real unusual deep voice.

Check it out if you get the chance. ;)

Re: best heavy metal album release?

For some modern stuff.

God Forbid - Gone Forever
Lamb of God - As the Palaces Burn
As a matter of fact, you'd be good getting anything on the Century Media label.

Re: best heavy metal album release?

How about a bit of 80's hard rock/metal for required listening:

RIOT (not Quiet Riot) - Fire Down Under (remember Swords & Tequila)
Judas Priest - Unleased In The East (Live In Japan)
Blackfoot - Marauder or "Highway Song Live" (not technically metal, but if you love Rock'n'Roll, say "Hell Yeah")
Motorhead - The Ace of Spades
Nazareth - Hair of the Dog (still a classic)
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden

Anything from Rose Tattoo will do. They were a big influence on Guns & Roses, who covered some of their songs, "Nice Boys Don't Play Rock'n'Roll". Not with quite the same "angry-ness", though. Nice to see them mentioned.

Re: best heavy metal album release?

Definately a bit of Budgie will do you some good. They're the poor man's Led Zeppelin. All the rock without the attitude. Didn't Metallica cover Breadfan? Budgie is still touring. How about some Wishbone Ash? Their first self titled album has some killer guitar. The rest of their catalog is great, too.

Duncan said:
Oh - I'd also suggest some Budgie. Their early stuff is pretty bloody heavy for the time, but also really interesting. Songs like Parents, Breaking all the House Rules and Breadfan are pretty good early heavy rock songs

I know some of you are thinking 'Why are these old bastards recommending all this old sh*t - this isn't metal' - If you like a genre, it's important to understand it's roots - and these guys (Sabbath, Beck's 'Truth' album, Cream, Budgie etc etc) are the roots of metal...

Why do you think us old guys who were influenced by Thin Lizzy, Led Zep etc etc, also listened to a lot of blues stuff - coz it was the roots of that sort of music...

Re: best heavy metal album release?

Exodus-Tempo of the Damned
Arch Enemy-Wages of Sin
Testament-the Gathering
Nightrage
The Haunted(First two albums are the best)
Children of Bodom-Hatecrew Deathtroll
The Crown-Possessed 13
Iced Earth-Alive in Athens(awesome live performance)
All that Remains-This Darkened Heart
At the Gates-Slaughter of the Soul(Reissue)

Keep it Metal:headbang:

Re: best heavy metal album release?

Re: best heavy metal album release?

I cant belive someone said ST anger like god, its metallica ands its O.K. but i mean **** thats going pretty low for metalica, metallica used to be fricking awsome, and they still are in live concerts cause the play the old stuff alot, so its not like metallica sucks, its just that albums sucks, but everyone has there own opinion i guess

s&m wasnt that great, stupid orchestra!!

Re: best heavy metal album release?

My vote for best metal album is
Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
other albums come close but no one can touch this one.
Anything from the NWOBHM* is an absolute must if you want to understand metal.

*New Wave of British Heavy Metal.... Thanks Brits!!!

Countdown is very stereotypical early 90s radio metal.

I'd hate to hear what you think of "Risk".

If you happen to have a distaste for radio-friendly metal, there are more annoying targets than Countdown. Even Megadeth's MOST radio-friendly stuff isn't as crappy as Korn, Disturbed and whatever else passes for metal these days. For the record, I thought Countdown was just as hard as Youthanasia.

Megadeth is awesome... I love every single one of their releases. They have yet to let me down.

EDIT: Also what is "stereotypical early 90s radio metal"? In the early 90s, they played nothing but grunge and alternative. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE grunge and alternative, but what metal was around at that time that Countdown reminds you of?

1) Queensryche Operation Mindcrime
2) Blue Murder Blue Murder
3) Tesla Mechanical Resonance OR Great Radio Controversy OR Psychotic Supper
4) Michael Schenker Group Save Yourselves OR MSG
5) Scorpions Love at First Sting

It may surprise you, but I like Risk. The main reason I dislike Countdown is the relatively weak songwriting on that record. After Skin 'O My Teeth, I don't care for too many tracks off that one. It also reminds me too much of the Black Album; very commercial sounding. The production may also bother me... Countdown just sounds too perfect, it doesn't have the vibe that many of the other 'deth albums have.

I actually listed to Risk a couple days ago... it's about 2 years and still counting for Countdown.

BTW, have you heard that Megadeth has a new album in the works???

I guess your opinion of Countdown is understandable. I sort of disagree, but everybody's got a favorite and least favorite.

Yes, I heard about the new album. I'm really really pumped for it, too. Jr.'s out, but Poland's in. This is definitely good news. If you're not a member of the Megadeth.com message boards, you should sign up. The boards are members-only and you can recieve constant updates from Mustaine himself. He's really good to his fans and the amount of news that comes from that place is incredible. For a short amount of time, they offered one of the new songs as a free downloadable .mp3.

It's very cool...

Re: best heavy metal album release?

I was a member of the old Megadeth board for quite a while, and I just registered on the new one. For less confusion, I now have the same name on this board as on that one... Can't remember my old name :dammit:

Re: best heavy metal album release?

You'll enjoy it. Like I said, Mustaine posts Mega-updates a couple times a week. Plus, nothing's better than leaked songs.

Re: best heavy metal album release?

dimmu borgir - puritanical euphoric misanthropia : its 10 times better than the new album imo, and theres no ginormous brass section to fart the bass frequencies on your speakers (thank god) - just good old gothic strings and piano
