Best high gain amp with Marshall distortion and GREAT cleans?

I'm looking to get another amp...in addition to my Soldano Hot Rod Plus. I love the amp I've got....but.....the clean channel isn't all it could be. So...I'm looking for a good high gain amp with Marshall like distortion and GREAT Fenderesque distortion. I've got up to $2K to drop if need be.
Any and all suggestions welcome.

I've been looking at the Rivera Knucklehead...but there's no local dealers around unfortunately.

If I'm not mistaken the HR+ is just a 2 channel straight up setup right? You might like the Splawn Quick Rod. (http://splawnguitars.com/ampmod.htm)

Separate clean channel, rhythm channel and lead channel with lead channel boost all foot switchable. Very much in the modded Marshall/Soldano neighborhood but I'd say better built then either,, having owned all 3 brands.

Re: Best high gain amp with Marshall distortion and GREAT cleans?

You might also check out a VHT Pitbull

My man you want what guitar players have been looking for for years...NO AMP CAN DO IT ALL...but some get close...I have heard good thing about the Rivera stuff (maybe Twlight Oddsey will chime in), IMO the VHT stuff has a killer clean and a great crunch but it is not a Fender type tone nore is the crunch like a Marshall! The Marshall DSL has a good clean IMO but most everybody here hates them (I don't know why), Bogner stuff is killer stuff...good cleans and great crunch, but again it sounds like a Bogner not a Marshall or a Fender, Diezel is the same story ( but you won't even get to look at a Diezel for 2k!) If I were you and I was looking for a great amp for around 2k (assumeing you have a cab and only need the head) I would look into a Bogner Ubershall or a VHT Pitbull...but be warned both amps are loud as hell, and the VHT is very very unforgiving of sloppy playing...these amps are ver articulate...even with tons of gain!

Re: Best high gain amp with Marshall distortion and GREAT cleans?

+1 for the Pittbull series from VHT ;)

Re: Best high gain amp with Marshall distortion and GREAT cleans?

i'd try out the Line 6 Vetta II HD.Got this one at home and it's just able to do anything you want. But it's not the cheapest of amps with a price of about $2k

Re: Best high gain amp with Marshall distortion and GREAT cleans?

Bogner XCT will do all that... and more, for 2k you can probably get one from E-bay?

You could also get a JCM800 and have it modded. I've read something about Jeff Seal mods on this forum that will give it amazing crunch and fenderesque cleans.

Yep, to my knowledge it was Jeff_H that had it done, but he hasn't been in in a while.

But it was Jeff that did it so just PM him and I'm sure he'll help you out :smoker:

I use a VHT Pitbull and if a great channel is a must it won't do. Don't get me wrong, the gain is great and it is a great rock/metal amp but no one will mistake a Pitbull's clean channel for an old Fender. I'd probably go Bogner XTC although it will be over 2K. If you wanted to drop 4K I'd say get a Diezel VH-4 because that head truly has it all.

Re: Best high gain amp with Marshall distortion and GREAT cleans?

There's a 1998 Rivera K-55 Knucklehead with el-34s on ebay with a "pay now" price of $650. Just a little heads-up. Peace.

Re: Best high gain amp with Marshall distortion and GREAT cleans?

I would think you would need something with 2 diff power tube sections.
6L6's for cleans, and EL34s for gain. Perhaps a rectifier from Boogie?

But the Riveras area a good option too. In fact I think the cleans and moderate crunch settings are better than the high gain tones. I just find the Riveras to be slighty muddy in the low end/lower mids when the gain starts getting cranked (Don't kill me Ben :D). I think It would be better to set it up with a heavy crunch rhythm sound and then goose it with a pedal for leads to keep it tight.

VHT's are excellent too but the gain sounds are much better than the cleans.

Re: Best high gain amp with Marshall distortion and GREAT cleans?

The Rivera Knucklehead will do what you ask. If you have to have reverb, their Knucklehead Reverb is about 1200 or so, but the KH55 without reverb is a freaking steal in the 550-600 range.

I promise you one thing.... It will do it all, exactly what you ask. And you'll save some money. It'll do both Tweed and Blackface Fender on one channel and a serious Marshall Plexi on the other. Both channels have a boost type mode. So, If you go by just your ears, it's more like a 4 channel amp, but it's really just two. Footswitch on the regular KH55 is a two button type that allows you to change channels on one button and then boost that selected channel with the other button. The Knucklehead with reverb has a much enhanced pedal that allows for all sorts of patches and stuff.

I mistakenly sold mine when I got it in my head that if an amp used a circuit board and wasn't point to point wired, it wasn't a good amp. how wrong I was. I saw the circuit board on a buddy's Rivera a while back and that thing is solid thick. Built liek a tank. Components looked easily serviced. Not the cheap flimsy boards that Fender and Marshall have been using the last 10 years.

You've got a huge budget. If you have to go all tube, handwired PTP stuff, then you're going to have some difficulties I'm afraid. I've got a Two Rock, but it's more of a clean Fender on one channel and a Dumble Overdrive Special on the other. Definitely not a marshall.

Bad Cat Hot Cat would be a cool choice, but I think the cleans are not up to par with the Rivera. Then again, it depends on what type cleans you want. That KH55 has great fender cleans, great fender distortion, decent Marshall cleans and great Marshall distortion.

Re: Best high gain amp with Marshall distortion and GREAT cleans?

Oh yeah, if you go with either Rivera head, you've got plenty of cash left over to buy a really nice cab. Or you might already have a great cab.

We get it; you like your Bad Cat.

Bad Cat is NOT the ticket. I love Marshall and that's why I sold my Hot Cat. The cleans aren't Fender, they're more Matchless than anything. The distortion won't get near as compressed, sustain as much, or be as thick as a Marshall.

Re: Best high gain amp with Marshall distortion and GREAT cleans?

Most Riveras do the Fender/Marshall thing quite well. Which one is best for you is something only you can decide.

Re: Best high gain amp with Marshall distortion and GREAT cleans?

I think the Budda Superdrive would do it. It comes in 18 , 30 , and 80 watts.

Re: Best high gain amp with Marshall distortion and GREAT cleans?

Knucklehead!
But, we've already discussed this, haven't we ...? :D

Seriously, if you can't find a dealer down by Yardley, and you're up for the 1.5 hr drive, you're more than welcome to check out my Knucklehead. I don't think you will be disappointed!!

Re: Best high gain amp with Marshall distortion and GREAT cleans?

I always hated Rivera amps. I mostly live on Bogners these days.
