Best Marshall JCM Style Amp

Re: Best Marshall JCM Style Amp

Ive been using marshall amps my whole guitar playing life but I have used Orange, Mesa, Vox, Fender etc amps on occasions and they all have their own unique voice. Ime Orange = smooth, Mesa = hot and modern, Vox = bright and jangly, Fender = clean. If you want a true marshall tone, you'll have to use a marshall. Same goes for all the other amps, they all do their own thing.

If you search around the internet you can find ways to apparently mod a Peavey Windsor into being pretty close to a JCM800. I have never played a modded one so I cant tell you how close it is.

Re: Best Marshall JCM Style Amp

If you don't mind having a less recognizable amp you can always think of a less known brands.

I heard opinions that eg. QuickRod from Splawn can sound more Marshall-ish than new JVM series - I don't know if that's true but definetely it's killer amp.
Also there's brand called Ceriatone . They've got amps that imitate Marshalls, and even their own hot-rodded stuf. Check out Chupacabra and Yeti.
At some time I was even considering buying an amp from them (JTM) but I live in Europe, so it's quite far away.... They ship worldwide obviously.

Have you heard about Splawn? Their QuickRod series - kicks ass. I've even heard they're more Marshall-ish than Marshalls 'new' JVM series. I don't know if that's true but for sure it' great amp.

There's also small brand called Ceriatone . They've got models that imitate classic Marshalls, fenders even Matchless. They've got also their own series - Chupacabra and Yeti which are definetely worth checking out. (Youtube demos) Great hot-rodded sound in good price.
Some time ago I was considering buying an amp from them (JTM).

Re: Best Marshall JCM Style Amp

I used to have a JCM2000 TSL 100 watt head, and even though it had a great clean channel, I found the distortion to be way too loose and muddy for my taste, despite my experimentation with various EQ settings. I winded up getting a Peavy JSX and 6505+ that I'm way more happy with. I've played through the heralded JVM410 at a local music store, but it sort of reminded me of the JCM2000 tone. Sure, Satch moved to Marshall, but he uses distortion boxes in the front, so the tone in the JVM's distortion channel is moot. Marshall 4x12 speaker cabs are decent, but I doubt I'll ever go back to using a Marshall amp, and I hate running fuzz boxes through the clean channel (distortion in the amp cuts so much better, IMO). Like they say, to each his own.
