I think you should seriously consider a peavey rage 158 with a metal zone in front of it.

LOL that's the best post ever! That's exactly what I started with :laugh2:

Oh, the memories. The tone... or lack of.

I think the amp that is always the quickest to put a smile on my face is the Mesa Mark III Coliseum 200-watt head and the 412 Half-back C90/EVM cab. It is more dynamic than it is loud, if that makes sense; but of course is does LOUD very, very well. Every guitar I've ever put through it sounds awesome. The cleans are solid and punchy, R2 is dark and grindy, and the Lead channel just sings and soars. Neither Fender or Marshall, the Mesa is a sound all it's own.

Still, even with five Mesa amps, I sometimes long for the Dark Side and wish I had a Marshall sitting around the house, like a TSL 122 or a JTM 45 half stack.

Oh, well.

Bill

just go get a VHT, one of the best sounding Marshalls ever that can get the tone at reasonable levels.

i got a 50/12 and it totally rocks.

i went to England to get an old Marshall, and although i found a few at pretty good prices, they didnt sound like the VHT at low volumes. Actually not even at higher volumes. The VHT's are modded right out of the box.

Marshall is great but needs too much tweaking or super loud volume.
and forget the newer ones. they are dogs. there you will spend more money on maintenance and the price will come out to the same as a good VHT or something similar.

Tried a CA OD100 and was real good but i thought the VHT was smoother.

After some searching... being a Marshall-head...
I have found the Marshall 6100 (30th anniversary) wins out for versatility, but I still feel the Silver Jubilee is THICKER. My 6100 and Framus Dragon sound great TOGETHER, and they can both be switched with MIDI.

ENGL - Powerball is the BEST (wow!) Metal amp I have heard so far. I would not say it does brown rock n roll, but it can fake it. For a modern distortion and metal sound, while still being toneful and responsive, I really liked the ENGL sound.

VHT - definitely what the Doctor ordered. I was highly impressed with these. They are everything from Marshall to pure modern metal.

For me, OF THE ONE's I HAVE TRIED - ENGL, & VHT do both MODERN (metal, etc) and old school hard rock all in one - which is my kinda thing.

I am still curious about some Egnater's (MICA - MIDI amps) I have seen used. The Mesa Triaxis has me intrigued (I used to love my VTwin), and Bogner wins for pure tone.

I didn't really put the Framus Dragon in my list because I am not trying to be a commercial for them. I just wanted to answer XSESSIVE. I didn't want to seem like I changed my mind on the Dragon. In fact, I have come to like the Dragon more and more... it's a very unique tone. the Dragon still retains a very Marshall-y character, esp in the mids, AND IT HAS MIDI. It can be crushing. It's not as over the top as the Powerball or Framus Cobra, but it still has a classic sound in it's signature.

Hmmm... what speaker cab was being used? Maybe some better tubes could have helped? I played a stock one (using whatever tubes it comes with) through a Germino 4x12 loaded with G12H30s.

Didja check out the link to the amps I posted? They really DO sound like that... I dunno, maybe you didn't hear the amp under an ideal setup. Plus we had the thing nut-rattlingly loud. You're correct in the assumption that the amp is very "honest" and reacts accordingly to whomever is playing it. So basically it is a rather unforgiving amp because it's so sensitive and detailed but if your chops are on game then expect to be handsomely rewarded. :D

It's not what you would call a high-gain amp... there's plenty of gain on tap though but what it lacks in metawl-gan amounts it makes up for in pure volume and saturation, natural compression, and purity of the tone.

Fantastic peice of electronics, if i do say so myself.

I've been wanting to answer this since you posted about CAE 100 but I've been SLAMMED here...

I'm in the middle stages of working on that record & don't have the time to sit here & type out the whole situation with all my thoughts & impressions in the kind of detail I'd like to convey.

It would take about 4 minutes to spit out over the phone though!

I'll be back for this either in a few days when they're EP is done or I have a chance to breathe my own air!

Maybe by that time my impression will change too...

What about a Blue VooDoo? Crate makes those right?

Re: Best Modern High gain amp that is Toneful w/ Mojo NO PEAVEY

Check the name!!!:smokin: I love my Vetta. You need to know how to manipulate it though. 80 amp models are alot but it models almost every amp listed here. If you can get your self around one with the new software upgrade and play with it for more than a couple of hours I think you'd be pleasantly surpised. I have the combo and love it. Most heavy music guys like the head because they can use there 4x12's or closed back 2x12's. And it does two amps at one...NICE!!!! from arenas to headphone my favorite amp....And I sold my Boogie to get it!!!

+1!!!!

My first amp was the Peavey Blazer 158 (the Rage, but with reverb), and I bought a Boss Metal Zone to put in front of it... it was fun until I realized it didn't sound good :p

ahhhh I forgot the Uberschall

BUDDA? I record with a SuperDrive 30 all the time (not mine) - it's a modern amp BUT NOT HIGH GAIN, and it TOTALLY feels like an old Marshall with Vox chime to it. In every way it's vintage sounding, and with the 5U4G Recto it feels really saggy.

i've heard the superdrive 80's were voiced more aggressive-ly and have solid state rectifiers. most people here prefer to use an overdrive pedal to smooth out the sound and therefore don't really need an amp that is truely high gain. either way i forgot you didn't want a marshall-ish amp
