Gary tried and used everything over his career. From plexis, through mf and jmp series NMVs, 800 series 1959s, soldanos with pedals, jtm45 with pedals, dsl, and back to reissue hw 1959s. He used Tubescreamers, guv'nors, radial, boss ds1s, and olord knows what other pedals over the years.

No one pedal will cover that spectrum.

The ZVEX Box of Rock is supposed to be a Marshall in a pedal.


Lovepedal makes great pedals for that. You can start your quest with the Purple Plexi.

Also...the 1 watt heads that they release last year or two years ago are great and very accurate.

I own and love the BOR,but it's not designed really to do anything really past the JTM 45/Plexi and Metal Panel Marshall era tones..The Crunchbox will get us there though.

MI Audio Crunch Box, it's very good at the Marshall sound.

I've tried a lot, including MI Audio and Wampler stuff.
My vote goes for Weehbo pedals.

Early JTM45 tone = Plexdrive
Early JTM50 to 1959 SPL = JCM Drive (like clean channel of a JCM2000 crunch, mode).
For higher gain, go for the JVM Drive. This can cover JCM800, hot-roded JCM800 and JCM900 and beyond.

In case of doubt, contact Eike for guidance, he's a friendly man.

BUT, BUT, BUT... don't miss their Helldrive. Not exactly a Marshall but, probably the best crunch box I've ever tried and, likes to push any other pedal stacked after it.
Still not tested their Mastiff (british hi-gain disto) but, if it behaves simillar to the Helldrive, this is a sure bet.

Don't forget to run those pedales with their Dynamics switch set to 18V then, they sound and behave as true tube amps. Awesome.
Smaller pedals, as the Bastard or Mastiff, that doesn't internally double the voltage, run better at 12V.

Just a friendly reminder, most of what gary used the lat 20 years was off the shelf. Unmodded production model Marshall's and a few stock strats.

Hey Phantasmagoria have you located in Bangalore right. Have you tried any of Roy's toys? I think he has one pedal that covers the JCM and plexi.

The plextortion is actually very warm.. many would say dark, unless you flip the presence boost on.

IME, none of the clips online I have heard capture the pedal accurately. Not to say I think it is the best, just stating my experience. I had some of my own clips of it, but I think I may have deleted them in recent weeks. May wanna check..

Interesting reaction to that demo. lolz!

I am going to go forward and say that the Lovepedal Purple Plexi is the worst sounding Marshall in a Box in the entire world... that pedal sounds like a harsh, fizzy box of crap. That's the 2nd demo I've seen on one and they both sound equally horrible. I've never heard a Marshall sound like that... definitely not a vintage one. Maybe it's modeled after the Marshall amps you can clip on one's belt? Not sure where Lovepedal is going with this...

Hopefully it's the reviewers (but one is Gearmandude and he is a VERY experienced reviewer) and not the pedal but at this point, I wouldn't pay $5 for the thing based on what I've heard.

it depends on the guitar and the amp
at 2'55" i like very much this sound!

i have a plexitube tonebone and i have not this beautiful sound
at home, it's not a warm sound and the lovepedal has the sound i like!!

but only 3 knobs is not good for the price

all the videos i've seen from wampler or weehbo
weren't as good as being in front of a amp
for sure, we can't judge by mp3 or videos
but for example, the jvm weehbo is not on ebay


i don't know if Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret III is good too

I still think it sounds like a buzzsaw through a ring modulator.

This is the demo that sold me on the JMP Drive... to my ears, it has the thickness and low midrange beauty of a real Marshall amp. The sound is full of harmonics and is VERY warm. There is absolutely nothing like it out there.

I am not trying to sell Weehbo pedals, but do want everyone to have the best tone possible. Just trying to help and am not trying to dog the Purple Plexi... I truly think that it sounds terrible.



I don't know of any pedal that sounds this good... I put it side by side with a DLS v1 and it destroyed the DLS... not sure how much better the 3rd version is.

i have a dirty little secret and its my go too marshall sound. sounds and feels fantastic. didnt really care for the I, but the II and III are great pedals.

Carl martin plexitone sounds great.
Played one through a vox pathfinder 15. Low/medium gain sound from plexitone is 100% identical to marshall 1987x I played the other day.
High gain, the bottom end fart out a bit. Could be the 8" speaker on the vox.

Thanks for the heads up...not really looking at buying any pedals at the moment, but that's a nice option to keep in mind. His Chorus pedal sounded pretty cool in the vid I saw..

Nuther vote for the Carl Martin Plexitone. I've had two originals and they're awesome in front of a clean amp. Total cranked plexi to JCM in a box... with two channels and solo boost. The only way I could think to improve it would be to expand the EQ section beyond just a tone knob. Would love to see treble, mid and bass knobs on there.

i like pedals which have contour, mids and bass, treble whereas if we haven't that, it will be boring!!

have you test the amt 2?
maybe, i will buy a mi audio crunch box
do you know?
the second version has more options: compression, presence etc but i don't know if i will have differents sounds or not
