Just to tell you guys about eddies plexi head supposedly it originally belonged to the the guy with an SG from birmingham ( hint hint ).

He got a signature amp and sold his old plexi heads as they were then redundant.

Who Iam I talking about guys??????????

He was using the Custom/59 Hybrid during the Fair Warning period... it was that tour that he told me about it.

BTR, i may give this hybrid a go if the custom i have on the way is not up to my liking?
can i ask does the hybrid sing like a JB?

Re: Best Pick up for EVH tone?

The JB has a very distinct and pronounced midrange resonant peak... the Alnico Custom/59 Hybrid has a very even and flat frequency response so it is more natural sounding and is more vintage than hot...
The JB can help an acoustically lame guitar achieve a decent sound, but the adverse is that it also can mask the tone and response of a great instrument.
That said, I have found the Custom/59 Hybrid not only to be the finest pickup for the Van Halen tone, but also perfect for classic rock, blues, etc... not really for Metallica, etc...
In the hotter realm, the Custom/JB Hybrid is a smokin pickup and can be fine tuned to your liking with either an A5 or the thin Ceramic magnet from the Custom

EVHolic - could you give a recommended sonic recipe for say, the VHI, 1984 and maybe 5150 tones? Gain/b/m/t/Vol and effects (w/ settings) along with your preferred pup?
I guess the easiest way would be for you to pick out the clips in my sig or ones i've posted recently that you like the best and i'll tell you what my setting were. There really isn't one specific way to get each tone. I just work with whatever amp i'm using to try and get the best possible tone to my ears regardless of whether it is close or not to VH's tone on the album. I just go for a balls out sound and record it. Sometimes it ends up being close to VH sometimes it doesn't but if i like the tone i'll just keep it. Lately i've been getting a pretty awesome VHI tone out of my 5150combo/Marshall cab setup. I find that the closest i get with the Marshalls is by just blasting them through the greenbacks and then turing the overall volume down with a Variac and then adjust the treble and bass depending on what Guitar/Pickup i'm using at the time. As far as a preferred pickup goes, the only PAF's i've tried are the 59 and a Dimarzio PAF. Out of the two i definitely prefer the 59. I know that there are many more out there that will also get you in the ballpark, i've just never tried them yet.

Hey Holic,
Just reading (and listening, great job by the way!) about your gear and amps and such. The 5150 combos are becoming few and far between, aren't they?
Any advise for shopping? (Marshalls, etc.)
Thanks
Thanks stung65. Peavey is still selling them, just under the name 6505 since Ed is no longer with them. Here's a link to the page. They pop up on Ebay from time to time also.
6505 combo
So far the setup that i personally like the best is the combo hooked up to my Marshall 4x12 with Greenbacks. It gets an awesome VH-like sound at any volume plus you get the effects loop. That's just my personal opinion though. If your into the Marshalls and don't mind serious volume, maybe look into the new Marshall Hand Wired Plexi's.

So your saying that Eds lengendary Marshall head used to belong to Tony Iommi? I`ve never heard that one before. I`ve read that the head was used has the house amp at local Pasadena club before Ed aquired it.

I don't think so.

The head belonged to Tonni Iommi.

The statement came from Tonni in a uk guitar mag. :fing25: :fing25: :32: :32:

I think I believe tonni Iommi anyday especally as tonni says I remmeber a spotty teenager by the name of eddie van halen wanting to buy one of my old amps.

This reminds me of when America wouldn't let concorde in as it's to loud.
The concorde was no louder than a 707 and america still would'nt let it in and eventually only to new york????

( I think america should of band 707 from flying then??????)
Why not band EddIe Van Halen he was just as loud and from europe to did you know??????

Re: Best Pick up for EVH tone?

Well Tony Iommi was is Jethro Tull for a short spell. If that is true how cool is that! Iommi IMO invented metal riffs. Back to the topic of this thread , how might a Screamin Demon sound with an A2 magnet. It`s fairly low output , could it do the VH thing?

Re: Best Pick up for EVH tone?

Tony actually used a heavily modded and rewired Marshall 59 plexi on the "Heaven and Hell" album recorded 79-80 and released in 1980 and it has some of Iommi's best recorded tone ever IMO. If anything, I believe Eddie's live Marshall rig got Iommi to experiment with Marshalls around this time.

I've heard clips....it rawked. It's a better option, IMO, then using a '59 (too bright/quacky) or putting an A2 in a '59.

At 10k, it doesn't even approach being overly compressed or too high in output.

Re: Best Pick up for EVH tone?

Has anyone ever tried a genesis mr. brownie pickup? There is minimal info out there. I would love to here some sound clips if they exsist. Please post them if they do.
