Best SD Pickup for an Ash Tele Maple Neck

Thinking of getting an ash Tele with a maple neck. I play blues and alt country type stuff, Wilco, Old 97's. Any suggestion on a good SD pick up match? Are there any special considerations due to the fact that it has an ash body / maple neck? The Tele has stock Fender's which are ok but Seymour's stuff blows them away I am sure.

Need bridge and neck.

Thx!!!:thanks::)

welcome

gotta be the vintage stack for tele set ... all the twang and spank of an ash/maple tele without the hum ... for added goodness, wire them with the 4-way mod for the series 'boost' combo

Thanks Tone!! The Five Two may be an option as well.

You definitely DON'T want a Dimarzio Air Norton in the bridge like I have on mine :D But the Dimarzio Area-T sounds all-Tele on the neck with no hum, if you don;t find an SD that does the job. I use SD's on both my Strats, but the Dimarzio seemed to fit the bill for what I wanted to do with my Tele.

indeed

if you want another cool option, consider a 59 humbucker (if you can rout and get a new pickguard) for the neck ... or, see if you can fit a lil59 in the neck ... 59 in an ash/maple tele neck position is a killer tone machine

Heya Chas, welcome to the forum!

Personally, I like the the JD/APS-2 combo. The JD has a little more output and warmth than most other vintage-voiced Tele bridge pickups; yet it shimmers with twang. It distorts very nicely too.

I know the APS-1/2 are Strat pickups; but, IMHO, they're gonna work much better for you than any Tele neck pickup will (well, maybe a Fender Texas Special Tele neck pickup). You'll need another pickguard for the Strat pickup but it should fit in the body.

Good luck and let us know what you choose...

If you want Strat tone but you don't want to modify your pickguard, try one of these available from our Custom Shop:

I have one in my #1 Tele. It's a great Straty sound.

Re: Best SD Pickup for an Ash Tele Maple Neck

Thanks for helping a new guy out! Played a Road Worn 52 Tele which sounded better than the reg 52 Tele. Both are ash but the road worn Tele felt better for some reason. Not sure i can handle paying another $250 sheets for the road worn effect though. I have some spiritual difficulties playing something that was age effected in a shop. Got to think it over cause with SD pups i think the un-road worn Tele will be a monster.

BTW this forum is the best - learning tons of stuff and I have been playing for 20 years!!!

No offense to Seymour, but I firmly believe that some of the very best Tele pickups to be had are made by our very own Zhang. My favorite tele pickup sets ever is the alnico V Paul Bunyan set. Contact him about those.
