I voted for Marty Friedman.

I think he's covered a lot of ground in his shredding. Cacophony, Megadeth, and his latest pop-flavored solo stuff. Very cool indeed!

I think Mr. Schenker probly deserves a nod here.

as well as Jason Becker.

but really "shred" in my mind is ed's middle name.

schenker is too tasteful and melodic to be considered a "shredder"

I gott agree here, that shit he did with Gilbert is some seriously shredderific stuff!

Wow, another Yes fan too, how cool! I was gonna mention Steve Howe, but he has slowed down a lot lately.

yes is one of my favorite bands and although steve how is not a shredder( though he did play some pretty fast stuff) he is still in my mind one of the best guitarists becuase of his creativity and inovationess.

I would say Michael Angelo for sure. Anyone ever got the movie for speed kills by him? I rest my case.

that switching thing that he does with his left hand makes him look like an alien or something. i mean it looks cool but it doesnt sound any different than his actually playing. and why would you feal the nead to play with your hand on the other side of the fingerboard. lol. i dont get it/.

Umm... other way 'round, mate!

Thats a tough call. They were born a few months apart and Quiet Riot and VH hit the LA scene pretty close to the same time and Riot's debut came out before VH I(I think). There is probably some cross influence, but Rhoads is a unique player for sure.

well for out and out shred id go michael romeo... he kicks ass speed wise.

but my favourite off the list, not necessarily speedwise is satch coz i find his songs more listenable

Marty Friedman, as he is also my favorite alltime guitarplayer. I've never heard more versatile and melodic playing from any shredder except for Joe Satriani, Marty just wins because he plays more of the styles I like. Marty Friedman is also a very down to earth guy, and I've never heard him talk any good of himself, but actually complimenting players who'd he played circles around. He actually hates the word shred :P

Other virtuoso players I like: Jason Becker, George Lynch, Rocky George, John Petrucci, Joe Satriani, Al DiMeola

Though only one is mentioned in the poll :(

Yeah, I'm sure I saw him playing at Disneyland when I was 13. There was this guy dressed in a silver sci-fi style spacesuit, playing shredder guitar, with two others, one on keys, and one on an Ewi (electronic wind instrument). He was flapping his hand around the neck like that.

I wonder if it was Michael Angelo. It was pretty plain that it was just a bit of steady income for them during the day.

Re: Best shredder

The best from a purely technical standpoint - Who cares? That doesn't matter anyway. The biggest thing is how the music hits you.

The best from my own personal perspective - Satch. He's a much better songwriter than people who get twice as much recognition. It's a shame you didn't include Jeff Beck on the list... I would have voted for him. Ability to write awesome songs, transcend genres and do what you do with style and conviction beat speed ANY DAY.

As for Rusty Cooley, he's a prime example of a really boring player, IMO. He can play as fast as anything, but his chord progressions are really cliched and ho-hum. I like guys who try not to sound like everyone else. Creativity is everything. Technical prowess will just turn you into another fat, aging Yngwie.

Re: Best shredder

Out of the list, Vai. Because unlike most of the typically acclaimed shredders his shredding is not only fast as hell but it's melodic and beautiful to listen to at the same time. Off the list, I'd say Petrucci.

Re: Best shredder

How come only guitar players qualify as "shredders"? Billy Sheehan is just as good if not better than some of the guys on your list.

Re: Best shredder

Of course that question is all a matter of opinion, but each of those players, and many more make up shred. Take away any one of those guys and see what would happen............You would take away a whole element of shred playing whether it be skill, speed, soul , or just anything they all have a hand in it and man, i thank them for breaking away and ripping like they did/do, because the insparation they have given me is great ,.................Cheers shredders! And to all who still shred, Keep rockin!!!!
