Re: Best shredder

Vai most definitely - very passionate, GREAT ideas, totally fluid technique.

I voted for SRV however CUZ HE FREAKEN ROCKS !!!

I do not like Malmsteen at all. I think he plays fast just to play fast. Steve Vai on the other is diverse and can play melodicaly, but can really let it rip too.

Re: Best shredder

Guys, you can only make ten options in a poll, so it's always gonna be limited.....

Thats a tough call. They were born a few months apart and Quiet Riot and VH hit the LA scene pretty close to the same time and Riot's debut came out before VH I(I think). There is probably some cross influence, but Rhoads is a unique player for sure.

Mike

Everything I've ever read points to Ed influencing Randy, not the other way around. Randy himself has been quoted as saying Ed was an influence.

Re: Best shredder

If I was asked "Who is my favorite on this list" I would have to say Stevie Ray Vaughan in a heartbeat...

But I don't consider him a shredder.

To me, a shredder is a player who's style is based largely on letting you KNOW that they can play REALLY REALLY fast and that they have a LOT of technique. And with that can come the possible criticism that MAYBE some compositions are merely vehicles for showing off.

Out of the actual "shredders" listed, I think Steve Vai is the best, hands down. Absolutely one of the most creative players ever, shredder or not.

Now if only more "shredders" could be as musical as he is.......

Re: Best shredder

Stevie without a doubt. Just listen to Scuttle Buttin' and see if anyone else can do that.

Re: Best shredder

I voted Freidman because he just kills, you can really feel his emotion in his playing.

But my favorite has to be John Petrucci. His talents strike me more as God-given than of practiced his ass off. Dream Theater has to be one of the coolest friggen bands of all time, too! Ahh...that brings in Paul Gilbert as well.....;)

Re: Best shredder

none of the above.

thay all play fast, but wether they do true shredding, its up to conjecture. lynch comes to mind, though.

Re: Best shredder

Im a big Joe Satriani fan, but as far as a shredder id say EVH or Vai, but EVH takes it!

Re: Best shredder

Sorry dude, but in my opinion, the best guitar player EVER is Jason Becker. pickup a copy of his cd, Perpetual Burn. It won't come out of your cd player. I love Marty Friedman, and Friedman played a lot with Becker, but if Friedman is even on this list, it should be called "Second best shredder after Jason Becker". Friedman doesn't hold a pick to Becker. Plus, Becker was like, 17 when he made Perpetual Burn...

Re: Best shredder

Jason Becker is what i would call "the best." He is possibly the greatest guitar talent ever and all his works were done at a young age compared to the guys on the poll.

Re: Best shredder

Steve Morse whoops everyone's butt on that list.

Saw Deep Purple tonight! I'm still shocked over how good the band and especially Morse is. The guy can play ANYTHING! He did some crazy finger picking stuff, shred, riffs, jazzy phrases, and baroque (dare I say neoclassical?) stuff. Besides his tone is to die for.

PS: Becker might have been faster than Friedman will ever be, but Friedman is the better musician overall.
