best single coil for drop c and hard rock

I have two strats that have hot rails in them and I love these pickups when tuned normal.

I am in a band that likes to tune to drop c and when I drop my strats that low they get really muddy sounding. Is there a better single coil pup for this, or should I route out the body and throw in a humbucker?
Thanks!

I'd try the quarter pound lead. I put one in my tele...it is basically an alnico 5 single coil pickup on roids. it has great treble response, and even though it is super high output (at least as high output as my hot rails strat, even though it only has 250k pots) sounds surprisingly awesome when played clean too.

another thing you might wanna try is putting some different pots in your strat. I have a strat with hot rails and I had the same problem until I put some 1 meg pots in it. it opens up your entire frequency range, giving you a substantially brighter sound, and gives higher output too. another possibility is to use no load tone controls, this will give you a brighter sound too. I'd try some different pots first if I were you, since pots are quite a bit cheaper than pickups, and a lot of times I have found that finding the right pots for a guitar makes all the difference in attaining that perfect sound.

just curious, what value pots and caps are you using right now?

I just replaced the volume pot and I would imagine that it was stock as well as the caps. I think I will try some 1k pots. Where is a good place to grab some? Feebay?

Re: best single coil for drop c and hard rock

you can get some 1 meg pots on amazon, ranging from 2-5 bucks a piece, and there is usually free shipping on most stuff I order there. pots and caps are relatively cheap, and if you do a lot of project it pays to have a collection of various types on hand. anytime I do a project I test the pickups with various pots and caps until I find the combo I like best, and I can tell you it makes a huge difference.

yeah if you were running hot rails with 250k pots I can imagine it would sound pretty muddy. you'll definitely want 500k or higher volume AND tone pots with those pickups. make sure you don't forget about the tone controls either. I think most people probably go with the 500k for volume and tone, but I personally love the sound of hot rails with all one meg pots!

well caps are really a matter of taste. the traditional setups you almost always see in any guitar are .047 mfd caps and 500k pots with humbuckers, or .022 mfd caps with 250k pots for single coils. these are excellent reference points, but I'd highly recommend trying different values for caps and seeing which ones you like best. each cap has a characteristic "cutoff" frequency, which increases as the capacitance decreases. so if you have a .047 mfd cap and your axe is sounding a bit too muddy, you can try switching to .022 mfd, since the cutoff frequency is higher and you will retain more of your high-end. you can find lots of different/uncommon caps on antique electronic supply, but most places you will be hard pressed to find anything but .022 and .047 mfd caps.

the cap is always in the circuit and will have a slight effect even with tone set to ten, and sometimes I've found this to improve the sound, like if your pickups are sounding a bit too edgy or harsh. but you can also use no load tone controls which remove the tone from the circuit at ten, and so you will have a slightly brightened sound with no treble cutoff. my strat has a .022 mfd cap in it, but most people would probably put a .047 in it. anyway what I would recommend for you is trying it with your stock cap first which is most likely a .022 mfd cap, and if you want to darken your tone a bit switch to a .047 one. it's actually a good idea to try both anyway even if you like the sound, just so you can see what your options are and what effect various parts of the tone circuit have. this will help you to attain your ideal sound in every guitar you own as you gain experience customizing guitars.

Is there anyway to tell with a multimeter what the resistance is on the pots that are installed? I have another guitar that has active pickups and was curious what the pot is.

Re: best single coil for drop c and hard rock

yeah just measure the resistance between the outside lugs. the resistance between the middle and either outside lug is variable depending on the position of the carbon wiper but the resistance between the outside lugs stays constant and is always at the max rating. they are often quite variable (plus or minus 20% on some) so don't be surprised if your 250k pot doesn't read exactly 250k or if your 1 meg isn't exactly 1 meg etc.
