Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

I'm not sure if it's the "best" sounding ss amp, but my favorite was the Marshall VS15 Valvestate. I should never have sold that one. :banghead:

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

I have been working on new tunes all day and I must say my Marshall VS 100 is kicking butt. I have been playing everything from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Disturbed on the thing and every time it just delivers. The cleans are beautiful on Simple Man and the amp takes to my stomp great for the high gain stuff. I love this amp one 12, 100/60 watts and great tone all for $200! Small enough to fit in my car and loud enough for any rehearsal or gig.

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

I really like the Orange CR120. It's basically voiced like a Rockerverb, but it's all analog solid state circuitry.

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

I'll stick with solid state amps myself when it comes to outboard gear. Running them as preamps into the computer through the FX send to add IRs is the icing on the cake. Tough to beat the Marshall Valvestates. The Peavey Transtubes, Ibanez TBX150, H&K Warp, some of the Crates, and Randalls also work great. I just picked up one of the hybrid Kustom S/S amps (with a single 12AX7) that James Brown designed, looking forward to see what that does. (He's the guy that designed the 5150, JSX, Transtube, etc.)

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

I like the Kustom Quad 200 I have. Screw what anyone else may think about it; it turns on and can get loud. It's good enough for now until I can start getting some classic amps with sounds I enjoy.

That's a great one too.

I got it for $120. :D

That is the mice thing about good solid state amps - so many people overlook them/don't want them so they end up being incredibly cheap in the used market.

What I like about it is how much mid range it has. It can become totally saturated in mids. It has a nice cheap Mesa-esque sound.

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

I love the Roland JC-120. When I last saw Iced Earth, Schaefer was playing through one. A friend of mine has an old late 80's Randall 120 watt half stack that just crushes.

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

Define "best" whats best for you probably isnt best for me.

I do admit to having a soft spot for the Ampeg VH140C but unless your after death metal type tones it probably wont hit your list of "best"

So true . . .

. . . imho, the'best' SS amp for ME, would be the Sunn Beta Lead.

I had both of those amps and miss them both. I do have a 70's Randall Commander IV now that someone gave me. 200 watts through 4x10 the thing is sweet. I would love another JC 120.

Randall, Valvestates and Gallien Krueger come to mind.

I loved the GK 250ML when it came out and tried one recently and hated it. It had no balls. I was disappointed because the price was right and I remembered loving that amp. Maybe I need to try another it could have been that amp.

I really like the Fender M-80 100 watt SS head with spring reverb... sounds killer going into my 1x15 Peavey PA cab.. SOOO much low end and power with this setup. Sounds even better cranked up but I don't get to do that often.

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

If you don't need an amazing amount of headroom, it's hard to beat the Hughes & Kettner Edition Blue 60R. Not the EB 60-DSP, with digital effects. Genuine Celestion 12" speaker. Killer "hi-fi" tone.

I agree with this. The Roland JC 120 has a crushing clean tone. I saw Mike Stern play one live and it was loud as hell.

Just got rid of my old Kustom HV-65, its one of their hybrid amps. So, I went amp shopping. I walked into the store and spent some time with a Vox AC15. Was really trying to like it enough to buy but it wasn't the right amp for me. it.

As I have had, up to this point, absolutely NO interest in Orange Amps, just a price range. The store owner suggested I try of their tube amps. After a few minutes he steered me over to their solid state amps. Ended up getting a Orange CR-60. The CR-60 stands on its own merits. It is a Rockerverb with op amps instead of tubes. This amp is simple, and that means no menus, amp modeling, or ten thousand options I'll never use. The amp is well built, and sounds good.

Here are some youtube reviews of the amp:

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

I'm lucky enough to have an early 90s fuzzy head Randall. It's actually a prototype and not a production model.

Even with my Marshall, Mesa and Fender and some other tube amps covering all the ground I could need, there's something about the way it sounds plugged straight in for heavy distortion. It's raw, aggressive, crunchy and sizzly while at the same time being nice and smoothed out in the top end and in a mix.

I find it pretty amazing for what it does and I have been using it more often for recording heavy tones lately.
