Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

I've been wondering about the CR120, I just wish I could find a demo with someone boosting it into deathmetal territory.

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

Have only some old Roland Cubes, so i can't say about nothing, really. that's the only solid staters i have using. when i get myself into real practice mode... i learn some sweep picking arpeggios and stuff. but that amp ain't get along with nothing else than my Stratocaster with typical alnico V singlecoils. it's cool amp with that guitar, because.. i can get some really hi gain sound, practicly out of single coils... on the most tube amps that i have... that's almost impossible without noise pedal or boost pedal. but with Cube amp.. there is no noise or need to use noise pedals or boosters.. which all eat amount of sustain :(

But, on the other side.. when compare this Cubes to my JCM 800, to be honest those Cubes sounds like s..t :) like nothing compared to JCM 800 .

However... i was in the net past two days searching for some higher wattage solid amp, like 100 watts of solid state power.... i would like to try those Line 6 Spiders, Fender Mustangs. and finnaly, i would like to try that Orange CR120. hopefully i can, because i found one store in my country.. that distribute and sells them :)

Anyone remember the Fender Dyna Touch amps? I had a used Princeton 65 a long time ago. The clean tones from it were like I'd died and gone to heaven, really touch sensitive too.

I'm curious about it too. Maybe in a year or two once there's a few on the used market and people don't know how good they are and sell them cheaply I'll snag one.

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

The Quilter amps are getting a serious buzz...thinking about getting an Aviator. Other SS amps that I've liked are the Yamaha G50 and the Lab Series stuff, the latter are really good with single coils.

Re: Best Sounding Solid State Amps.

Would have to +1 the Ampeg VH140C and I can get some pretty great non death metal sounds out of it by keeping the gain way down proper EQing and using a tube screamer for lead boost/sustain.I had a Sunn Beta Lead for 20 years and miss it terribly now :( here is a really spiffy thing that I found behind a closed door in the jam room I am setting up 10" speaker 150 watts and just some crazy sound Petros I by Rock Amps early 70s

I've got a couple of Crate GX-130Cs and they're close enough. I don't know how they sound on lower gain settings though, never tried it. :firedevil

I was just gonna ask about these. I'm a tube amp guy all the way, but have been curious about the Quilters. They are are PROUD of them though! Tube amp prices.

My favorite SS amp during my lifetime has probably always been my Marshall Lead 12. I got one for HS graduation in '86 and had it for years. I eventually sold it. But picked a mint used one up at my local shop last year and wired it so I could plug it into my 4X12. With an OCD up front and running into that cab, it sounds a lot like a JCM800 head. It's even fairly loud. No cleans to speak of, but I just use it for practice now and then.
