Big wiring problems: HSH, 5 way, 2 volumes...

I just tried wiring it all by myself, but when I turned it on it had a totally uncontrollable buzz... Here's the configuration:
Coolrails/Jackson J100 single coil/OBL450L
I'd like it wired as volume for CR and Jackson, and it's a pushpull so I wired it to split the CR, and with a volume seperate for the neck.
My Jackson 5 way switch looks weird... Basically it has numbered lugs: 1230123. So I connected the bridge's hot wire to the 3, middle to 2, neck to 1, output to 0. Then I wired the bridge/middle volume pot to the 2nd set of lugs 3 and 2 (together) and the other volume to the 2nd lug with number 1. I can hear the sounds from the pickups, but the buzzing is overwhelming...

Did I wire it correctly at all? It sounds like a grounding problem, I'll recheck it later tonight, or after I actually finish seting up the guitar. But I'm still not too sure on the way I wired those pots, especially considering this switch looks awkward.

OH DUH! I just realised I forgot to ground the 2nd pot back to the bridge :smack: I'll try this tomorrow. Meanwhile if you see anything wrong with the way I wired it, just tell me please...

Re: Big wiring problems: HSH, 5 way, 2 volumes...

The missed earth on the pot is probably the source of the problem, but check that you haven't reversed the earth and signal wires at the output jack; I've done that and I ought to know better...

I can't see anything wrong with the way you've wired the switch, but a missed earth, like the one connecting the bridge to the pots can cause problems.

Yup that was the first thing I checked. I believe I did ok based on the diagrams I saw. But if it still buzzes, I'll switch them. Cheers dude!

Re: Big wiring problems: HSH, 5 way, 2 volumes...

I'll go with the missed earth wire then. I had this on some Ibanez plank I fixed the other day it had a transducer bridge and no earth wires connecting the pots. It made a hell of a noise until I got it strung up as well...

Ah... I hear ya. Thing is, this is the second time it happened to me! Last time on the model 4 I had grounded everything to the back of a pot, but forgot to put it to the bridge. I'm destined to suck at grounding. When I have kids they'll have parties too often :(

Re: Big wiring problems: HSH, 5 way, 2 volumes...

Dude you were so right hahah! I had inversed the ground and hot on the input! :smack: I followed the diagram but for some reason it was wrong it seems. Thanks A LOT!
However now none of the pots seem to work. *sigh*

Glad you got it sorted.

It's the output by the way ;)

If i had a penny for every time I got a repair docket saying "guitar's input jack faulty"...

You might like this guys website, I ran into him on a Google group. I don't know how good he is, but I like his style. He looks like the god of eighties rock. I especially like the section on tuning the guitar using cheese...

The pots; did they work before then? I saw your thread on this elsewhere but i didn't post anything as it seemed Artie and Lew had it under control...

Re: Big wiring problems: HSH, 5 way, 2 volumes...

Actually I don't know if they worked before. If they didn't though, wouldn't I notice a difference in the signal anyway? There was absolutely none today...
