Bill Lawrence L-500-XL + different types of wood...

So I recently put a Bill Lawrence L-500-XL (from www.billlawrence.com) in my Jackson RR3 with an alder body. Now, don't get me wrong; this pickup is badass. But, it's not exactly what I was looking for. I heard that this pickup really varies from wood to wood. Is this true? I want to get the most badass-ness out of this pickup and use it to it's full potential.

Yes it's very true. They are very transparent and will let you know wether or not you got a good chunk o wood, amp etc....Also very unforgiving. These pickups are also very sensitive to height adjustment and pot values. They are recommended for use w/ 500k A taper pots. Depending on the pickup/control setup, I might use 500k, 1meg, 350k.
