Black LP - would you buy one?

I've spotted a couple of MIJ Tokai LP standards recently that seemed to be going for pretty good money... the question is does colour affect resale value on ome guitars more than others?
Lets face it, LP standards you expect in some form of sunburst or a gold top; customs in black or white, SGs some shade or reddish brown.
Obviously there are some colours, such as pink or electric yellow that are most definitely a matter of taste.
But why not a black standard, or a red custom, electric blue SG (which looks pretty sweet to me).
Is it just another case of us six stringers being far to stuck in our ways?
Or is it just me?

I'd buy one! I'm pretty sure that PUH has a really nice black LP standard that looks great.... go get it!

Re: Black LP - would you buy one?

I have a black epi std.

It's my number 1 guitar and I think it will be until I can get an ebony les paul trad. pro.

I rock mine with black speed knobs, a black pickup selector ring, no pickguard, and red/black duncan 59's.

A black LP is one of those things for me... it just looks so sleek and sophisticated. not too flashy.

Re: Black LP - would you buy one?

Get one if the price is good, you'll not be disappointed.

Yes there are classic stereotypes like you mention but I think black is still one of the classic colours for an LP, its not as if your looking at a pink paisley LP!

A mate of mine has a gorgeous black standard, he's lucky I haven't clubbed him on the back of his head with my Tele and run off with it...

+1. Black LP Stds are classy. That tuxedo look. One of the best I've seen is the ebony '56 with white soap bars. Man, they look good.

Re: Black LP - would you buy one?

In general black guitars have slightly worse resell value because they look better in person than on average guy's photos when selling. Hence more guitar center pickups and less ebay success.

Re: Black LP - would you buy one?

I always preferred the black customs to the standards, purely because of the gold hardware. I'm a sucker for black and gold...

Re: Black LP - would you buy one?

I like Customs in the classic black/ gold hardware. With black standards I think you have more options... black/ gold, black/ cream, black/ silver...all look good good to me!

Yes sir I do! I'd be happy with a gold top, cherry burst, and black. Those are my three favorite finishes for LPs, and they're all classic. An ebony LP looks great and, as Blueman pointed out, has a certain tuxedo evening charm.

Honestly, I'm surprised there's even a question about resale value for an ebony LP.

I like black LPs but especially black LP Customs. They just look awesome.

Re: Black LP - would you buy one?

Black is one of my favourite Les Paul finnishes... Gold Top is number one, Black is Number 2

IMO, when you are buying a Gibson, you are paying for a quality piece of wood.

Painting can be used to hide cheaper wood.

Paint solid colors on the low end stuff, but not the high end.

There are some beautiful solid color Gibsons, and LP Stds & Customs are a couple of them, along with SG Customs. Everybody isn't trying to pawn off substandard material on the public. Sounds like you're letting paranoia take over.

Re: Black LP - would you buy one?

The black Gibson Les Paul Custom must be the classiest guitar design known to mankind.

I used to have a 1968 Black Beauty "Fretless Wonder" with two pickups, back in the day. Heck, I got a lot of gigs just because I had THAT guitar!
