Black Winter

Re: Black Winter

Dammit! And I JUST ordered another custom shop Tyrannotitan.... MJ confirmed that TT has a single thick ceramic mag, and the BW has triple... Hmmmm .... Must get one now too, and I was planning to change my '59 necks for the whole lottas.... Need money, what can I sell hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

With 3 mags it makes it a cross between a DD and an invader? or is it just an invader with slugs and screws?

Re: Black Winter

The Invader sound is highly generated by the cap screws. The triple mags add power, attack, and a tighter response. Even though the coils are similar, the Black Winter and an Invader will not sound that much alike.

But would triple mags in a DD give you the black winter or is it different winds?

Re: Black Winter

They might be slightly overwound, DDn 12.7 vs BW 13K, but I don't know for a fact. I'll go out on a limb and say yes.

Re: Black Winter

I've never been so excited for a pickup. :D

And the Black Winters have a higher resonant peak than the Distortion, but same DCR (bridge). The neck has a very slightly lower resonant peak than the distortion neck and a very slightly higher DCR. All according to the tone chart.

It would be really nice if SD designated which pickups are the same winds to avoid confusion and forum-fights.

Re: Black Winter

I'm a huge fan of the Duncan Distortion. I could definitely see a set of Black Winters going into one of my guitars as a variation though... I am already half considering if I want to pull the Dimebucker from my Washburn to put a Black Winter into it instead.

I have already heard some good youtube demos of Distortion vs Black Winter, I feel like an A/B/C comparison of the Invader, Black Winter, and Dimebucker would really spotlight the frequencies all three really hit.

I've been in the market for a 7 string lately (with a possibility of the Nazgul pickups if the stocks do not fit my needs), but the Black Winters are making me consider if I need another 6 string too!
How do they compare to the Invader?

Re: Black Winter

It appears that it might (finally) be a set that is set up to do WELL in a 24 fret guitar. That's very exciting to me! I wish they had a "heart of winter" or something in white for my PRS.

Re: Black Winter

Now I would like the Nazgul, Sentient, and Pegasus in 6 string versions along with the black winter set so Duncan will have a much more extensive range of passive "metal" pickups than just the Distortion/JB/Custom/Invader options.

You forgot the Dimebucker and Trembucker Distortion! :P

Not to divert too much from the Black Winters, but from the demos for the Nazgul vs the Distortion (7 string), it sounds like the Nazgul is a little more open/dynamic. The Black Winter sounds a tad higher output and brighter than the distortion on the other side. The Custom is slightly lower output than the Distortion, but still has that nice, crisp chug.

I really feel like the Distortion is still the benchmark by which the others are judged, but it is so awesome to have those slight variations to fit specific guitars, amps, players, and styles just a little bit better.

Keep up the R&D Seymour Duncan!

The wind is not the same. The resonant peak gives that away. I tell you that its coils are more similar to my TT custom shop, brighter than the sh6 and growlier mids. I will do a comparison video of a Black Winter vs the Tyrannotitan when I get around to buying a BW.
