Black Winters or Fishman Modern

I realize I am on a Duncan forum so I may get bias responses. I have a Kiesel Vader-7 swamp ash body and top with maple neck, ebony fret board, neck thru and 27" scale. I am looking to replace the stock Kiesel Lithiums since I hate them. Very thin sounding, they feel like that have no bass and the highs sound very brittle. Im just sick of them. So Im looking for pickups to play thrash and death metal genres. I think ive narrowed down my picks to the Black Winter or Fishman Fluence Modern 7. Can anyone recommend or comment on either? Thanks.

Re: Black Winters or Fishman Modern

Black winters are just awesome in general, one of the SDs available not just for metal
Have no experience with the moderns though

Re: Black Winters or Fishman Modern

Guess I am a little concerned with the wood combo making the black winters overly bright but I will admit I am not very knowledgeable about these things.

Re: Black Winters or Fishman Modern

I get the impression that both the Black Winters and the Fluence Moderns are more the super tight type rather than warm/fat/thick, TBH.

thrash and death metal...from what ive heard bw set would be perfect. im biased only because to me actives are a pain in the ass and fishmans are an EXPENSIVE pain in the ass with the charging and the batteries. look into bkp contemporary range. ceramic nailbomb is probably good for thrash. duncan custom is another good option as thrash/death dont exactly rely on high gain chord clarity.

If you’re running multiple amps in bias fx then the fluences would lead you to having the biggest variety of tones but the Black Winter set is just killer and perfect for death/Black/thrash as well as clean stuff without having to deal with active circuity
Custom 5 is so good as it has plenty of clarity and punch as if you combine a high output pickup with a super hi gain amp you just get a flubby/fizzy mess
I use mid output pickups and mid high gain on the amp and use a OD to tighten things up
The nazgul is pretty fat too

Yeah actives don't bother me and with bias fx I may appreciate the 2 additional voicings the fishmans offer. Still undecided waiting to see if Keith Merrow Sig set is announced at NAMM and hear what they offer.

Never tried Fishman modern. But I have the black winter set and I am one of the happiest man on earth

Probably going to get the Black Winters all the sound demos on youtube sound better to me than any of the fishman demos. The more I hear it the more the Fishman sounds just like an EMG-81 with the passive voicings not really changing enough to be worth it for me.

Yeah you just can’t go wrong with the black winters

Keith Merrow's signature Schecter is Swamp Ash and has Black Winters in it. Haven't played it but it should sound good if Schecter picked them for that guitar.

Tonewood aside, I can't recommend Black Winters enough. Love them.

Nice didn't realize that. I thought they came with a Nazghul..Well looks like I'm going with the Black Winters. Thanks for the replies everyone.

I own a km-6. I bought it last October. The guitar was the one Keith signed after the Conquering Dystopia clinic in Rome. Great instrument so far. The black winter set in it has different specs if compared with the aftermarket version. Taking aside the cosmetic they have two rows of allen screws instaed of the slugs and the screws

I also thought that they featured Nazgul because of the dark font. But those are 'blackened' Black Winters as it turned out.

Didn't know about the allen screws. Were apparently not tight enough for Keith.
