Blackface Deluxe RI tweaks

Lew....which Emminence speaker most closely approximates the Jensen.....or Oxford..... that came with the original blackface Deluxe?

Personally, I never liked the speaker that originally came in my Deluxe Reverbs. Small magnet...small voice coil. Farty tone.

I replaced the speaker in my first DR almost immediately with a Jensen C12N I had from an old Pro Reverb...big improvement. If you're going to go with a Jensen, I'd go with the C12N. Even the Italian made reissue is a decent speaker.

Scott's suggestion of the Eminence Texas Heat is probably a good one...I liked that speaker alot when I played through it at NAMM, although I liked the Governor and Wizard more.

But really, the one to get is the Celestion G12H30. That's my favorite speaker in a DR and also the favorite of the world's #1 amp guru and the legendary designer of Trainwreck amps: Ken Fischer.

He's the guy who I first heard recommend the G12H30 in a DR...and he was right. It's the best.

I've tried a million diferant speakers in my DR's over the years. My faves are:

1. Celestion G12H30
2. Celestion Vintage 30
3. Jensen C12N...but it's a distant third.

Are we talking original PTP wired amps from the 1960's, or can some of these mods be made to the new Fender 1965 Re-Issue DR?

The mods are the same for both amps. They will be easier on a PTP amps but will work on both.

Hey Lew......How would a Heritage Greenback work? Or in the alternative, putting the Heritage G12H30 from the 18w into the Deluxe and the Heritage Greenback into the 18w?

Re: Blackface Deluxe RI tweaks

the greenback can be a little weak on the bottom unless its in a closed back cab and isnt as loud as a g12h. i have a greenback in my modded blues jr and i love it but it isnt quite loud enough some times. if you want a cleaner tone the g12h is the way to go.

i have a texas heat and i like it alot. part american c12n, part british g12h with a little extra thrown in. its probably as loud as the greenback, not the g12h. another from the eminance line to look into is the red fang. i just heard one of those in a sf dr and it sounded very nice

Re: Blackface Deluxe RI tweaks

I don't need loud right now.....hearing is shot.....lol. I looked at the specs a while back and noticed that my Heritage G12H30 is about 3-4 Db more efficient than the Heritage Greenback. I could make a colorable argument that I have TOO much botom in my 18w especially when i plug in the Les Paul. Part of that probably has to do with the fact that the 18w only has a single tone knob so you can't tweak it as much as the DR or the Plexi. So if I bought this Heritage Greenback, i would probably be inclined to put it in the 18w and put the H30 in the DR. Or just get another Hritage G12H30. Pricey, but i only have to buy one and I do like the way they sound.
