Hey guys, anyone know how much it would coost me to blackface my super reverb and if there's anyone in the Memphis, TN area that can do it? I'd appreciate some help!

Re: Blackfacing cost?

WOW sorry, but I went to click on the link and you moved it in the .0000000005 seconds that it took me to click. NICE!! Sorry I am no help on the cost of Blackfacing by itself, but I do hear amazing raves about the Voodoo mods that can be done on your amp to Blackface the trem channel and Plexi out the Normal channel. I think they charge around the $275- $300 mark.

Re: Blackfacing cost?

yeah, that's quite the cost...but why go that route when I'm getting an Edana combo from Scott? Nah, I just wanna blackface the heck out of this thing :) even gonna snag a black faceplate.....it'll be super cool! :)

Re: Blackfacing cost?

that is quite a distance to ship my amp though...I was hoping to not have to ship it so i wouldn't have to worry for about 2 or 3 weeks or more while I wait to make sure it got there safely, got the work done, and mailed back to me safely...I just really don't trust any of the shipping companies enough to put this in their hands...

I don't blame you.

Go to Weber VST:amps or to Ampage and ask your question there. Someone will help you out I'm sure.

Another option, if you are slightly handy with a soldering iron is to do it yourself. Gerald Weber (whom I like a lot, but gets trashed quite often) has a little kit with all the components you'll need. I've even got a VHS tape that shows you how to do it. It's not that hard. But, you do have to know how to discharge your caps.

Here's what happened to me when I did mine though... you'll find a lot more components that need attention once you get in there. I had several capacitors just crumble when I tried to move them a bit with my chopstick. Next thing you know, you''ll be doing a complete overhaul.

Another option since you are talking about coming to TX to pick up your amp is to just bring it with you and we'll blackface it over a few beers.

Hi Scott! Are you thinking of Gerald or Dan Torres? I didn't know Gerald had a kit like that...I know Dan does...and he gets trashed even more often than Gerald! :) His kits do work though...I learned alot about amps from installing Dan's kits. Lew

Gerald weber, Kendrick, Austin area

He gets beat up a lot because he's such an enthusiastic salesman for his own stuff. But, you have to know that going into it, right? He's a hoot to talk to live. He's got so much experience, I learn something new every time I talk to him.

I got to meet him at one of the Dallas guitar shows a while back. That was even funnier.

He signed one of his books to me with something like "To Scott: I hope this book lasts longer than my new thirty bucks does!"

Re: Blackfacing cost?

He charges 35 bucks for his silver to black "kit". It's only a handful of components, total value probably about 5 bucks or less. So, you're paying for the step by step instructions. But knowledge is power. :)

Yeah I've spoken to Gerald...no problems at all and he was very helpful. Thanks! Lew

Re: Blackfacing cost?

Gerald is a hell of an amp tech and a hell of a guy but he can be hard to take to some people and he is VERY open with his opinions and that turns a lot of people off.

If you think you could handle the work yourself then give it a shot if not find a good tech...even though you would have to ship the amp to him Bruce is a hell of an amp tech...I am in fact goning to send hum my Twin for some much needed work very soon. He also built my Tweed Super and I can tell you first hand he knows his stuff...Bruce gets 2 thumbs up from me!:fing2: :fing2:

Re: Blackfacing cost?

thread derail... i really want to play one of Kendrick's K-Spots. It wasnt' that long ago he announced he was getting out of the amp bidness, then he came back in with this one.

The way I look at it, and the reason I want to play it, is that this amp should have all of gerald's experience and fine tuning in it, developed over the years. I'd like to hear how good that really is. That'd be another reason to go to the upcoming DFW guitar show.

WOW!!! That sounds like the offer of the century there!! How could you pass that up?

Gerald never actually stopped building amp...he did cut way back and he did discontinue most (if not all) of his Tweed Fender clones.

I don't know man, he took out huge full page ads in Vintage Guitar where he said he was done making amps, wanted to focus on his seminars instead. I'm guessing the seminars aren't the big draw he was thinking perhaps? I dunno. Still a good guy, no doubt.

Re: Blackfacing cost?

Man, that does sound like the offer of the century, just gotta figure out what I'll do with my girlfriend for a couple of hours while it gets done :) I love her dearly, but she's not the most patient person, nor does she understand the finer points of getting great tone...an amp is an amp ya know? :) (and do you think she'd let me go to Texas without her? what..with that reputation texas women have? ;) )

I actually do think I'm quite capable of doing it myself, I do know how to discharge caps (had a very competent electrician friend of mine teach me)....just a matter of getting the right parts and doing it. One thing I don't have is a meter for checking the resistors and capacitors...something i'm sure I should pick up anyway, just something I haven't gotten around to...anyone got one they recommend that doesn't cost big bucks?
