Anybody has a schimatic of a signal chain/set up Sir Blackmore had during the Dio period of a Rainbow? That tone on "Catch the Rainbow" leaves in AWE evertime.

I think it;s the same setup he had in the last days of Purple.... Scalloped neck strats, Awia Tape Deck used as a preamp, into Boosted Marshalls....

+1

Into boosted Marshall Majors (200W:bigeyes2:) at ungodly volumes.

Re: Blackmore/Rainbow/Dio

Awia tape deck? what's that, and what do you mean Boosted Marshals? Modded to 200w?
thanks

Ah the younger generation.:) It's an old cassette player.

Blackmore had a tape deck that was modified to boost the signal from his guitar so it hit the preamp harder, for a certain tone and added distortion. The amplifiers were Marshall Majors, which were 200 Watt amps, I don't know if they were stock or tweaked.

Re: Blackmore/Rainbow/Dio

Younger generation? What are you, 25?

It's a reel-to-reel, not a cassette! He used it like an echoplex, for delay, but discovered that the tube preamp thickened the tone, even in bypass.

The amps were modified so that the preamps cascaded, rather like the MV Marshalls of '75 and up.

I have an old 70's Blackmore interview and in it he claims that the Marshall factory staff got sick of seeing him bringing in his Marshalls for my adjustments.... At one point he was claiming to blow speakers regularly.... could very well be true... these days i can't see anyone wanting to ever standing in front of these loud beasts... But sometimes i wonder how much of it was just talk... Example: Townshend used to use 3 customized Hiwatt heads at 120watts each into 6 cabs..... many report now that only the bottom row of speakers was on and only 2 heads were running at a time....

Re: Blackmore/Rainbow/Dio

So, you mean to tell me that gentle, singing tone on "Catch the Rainbow" are 200W Marshals?
As far as Awia tape deck, didn't EVH used something similar too?

Ya Ritchie is said to of used 200 watt Marshall Major's.... but you have to think in the studio they could of used anything... Not just Marshalls...

Well EVH had a few Tape Echo units...... Univox's and Echoplex's..... the end of Eruption is not a dive with a trem bar it is Eddie holding the delay in a loop and lowering the tape speed....... lower the tape speed, lower the pitch... An anolog Digitech Whammy type effect 30 years ago.... Tom Scholz from Boston had simluar ideas and pitch bending effects he made himself i think tape echo based....

But the tape deck Blackmore used was more of a huge Overdrive Preamp unit... He said it gave strats balls and added the right amount of distortion.... so it basicly added some EQ and OD..... You can hear Ritchie using tape delay live on tunes like Mistreated but i don't think that is from the Awia tape deck he uses as a preamp, could be an echoplex... The delay may even be added to the pa by a soundman like the Who used to do.... Townshends soundman used to add Tape delay to Petes guitar during solos and stuff... Even to this day they add lots of delay to Petes guitar at the PA during solos. the Soundboard recordings are just full of echo!

I used to have a Korg Space Echo tape delay and reverb. It reeked of 70's rock vibe. On mine however the reverb was useless noise and I never got it fixed. One thing intersting about these units in general is that they clip the signal imparting an odd square wave distortion that is very subtle. Its an odd order harmonic that really adds presence.

I always understood that his Marshall Majors were boosted to FIVE hundred watts, and he used a treble booster. I've read that in a few different sources.

And yes, that tone on 'Catch The Rainbow' is a Major, and some type of chorus, :smokin:
(I'm listening to 'Catch' off of 'Live in Germany'. KILLER swirly tones) :yes11:

For other KILLER Blackmore playing/clean tones, check out:
'Rainbow Eyes' off of 'Long Live Rock & Roll.'
Blackmore is one of my favorites :notworthy:cool2::notworthy

the only 2 Rainbow cds i own is the Live In Germany set and the Greatest Hits cd that came out a few years ago.. I always loved that tune Stone Cold....

I can't see 500 watts... I can hardly stand in front of my 5150 which is 120 watts...... I think the massive amounts of volume is pure Rock Myths.... I could see using 200 watt Marshall Majors for someone who wanted extreme volume a with lots of headroom.... But talking to a guy i know who has some vintage plexi's and a Major he told me that once you get the Marshalls loud... no matter how much more you turn the knob it just seems to get more distorted
