Blackout Modular Preamp and Out of Phase PUs

Greetings, I am studying the BMP to decide if I should try it. After a quick search at the forum I found some answers, but I still have some doubts.

Coil split issue is clear, if I do it, I will get the traditional hum. But:

1) Can I do phase inversion of one coil in the input of the BMP (I imangine that will be a humbucker out-of-phase in series)? Or would that cause any damage?

2) Once I have the Bridge PU and Neck PU blacked out, can I put them out-of-phase (series)?

Thanks in advance!

I can attest to #2 working. 1 of my 2 BMP's is wired that way, and it works better than usual for me. Usually, I can't stand out of phase pickups...they are just too weak & thin for me. However, the BMP adds so much output & thickness, that it is actually usable.

Do you get that "nasal" tone?

Re: Blackout Modular Preamp and Out of Phase PUs

I would not describe it as nasal sounding. I actually did it by accident. I used 2 different make pickups and got them out of phase from each other unintentionally. I played that way for awhile, then corrected my 'error'. However, I ended up liking the out-of-phase setup better, so I switched back. You can tell there's a lot of cancellation going on in the low-mids to low-end, but it is a cool sound for clean funk rythm & more stinging distorted leads. It is more versatile this way because now my middle p'up selector setting is more distinctively different from positions 1 & 3 than it was when in phase. I'm sure, based on the 2 pickups used, the results could vary greatly.

I see.

Phase was inverted before the BMP (connecting wires into the BMP) or after (connecting the BMP output in the PU switch)?

Do you have any recording of that sound on the net (youtube, for instance)?

Thanks a lot for the feedback!
