Blackstar HT-5H Question

I'm considering getting this amp (or the Vox Lil Night Train) and I see that it has an ECC83 and a 12BH7 tube. I looked at The Tube Store and they're both listed under preamp tubes. My question(s) is is there no power tubes and is this a hybrid?

While I have your attention, which would you pick out of the Blackstar and Vox. I play rock/80's metal.

Re: Blackstar HT-5H Question

I've got a Lil Night Train, and it's definitely all valve, it just uses the 12BH7 as a power tube, that's why the output power is as low as it is. As for doing metal, as nice as the Lil Night Train is, I'd go with the Blackstar.

The 12 bh7 is a very low power power tube, they found a tube and design that was better at getting cranked tube tone at lower levels. The ecc 83 is the preamp tube

The ht5 does a good metal tone if you put an eq in the loop and a booster like a tube screamer in front

Re: Blackstar HT-5H Question

Get the blackstar.

if you want metal at a nice bedroom ish level with a nice budget price tag it's for you.

I have never tried the eq in the amp but what I will say is definitely get one. I nearly bought a Vox Lil' night train myself, but when I played through one I was very disappointed for what I wanted. The blackstar has plenty of balls about it for a 5 watter.

I also swapped out the ECC83 for an EH gold pin tube, I am yet to replace the power tube. trust me the EH tubes are great in this amp. they add a lot more clarity to your sound but help give killer distortion.

Also with the ISF you can pretty much nail the majority of USA and British amp tones.

Re: Blackstar HT-5H Question

I'm definately leaning toward the Blackstar mainly because it's 5 watts instead of 2. I would like to get a little cleans out of it so I figure go with the high watt out of the two. I also like the 3 band EQ instead of the 2 on the Vox. Both has a headphone jack which will come in handy sometimes at my apt.

I found I can get a used NT-5H on Ebay for the same price MF is charging for the Vox which is good, I can look at the product and not the price now.

Re: Blackstar HT-5H Question

the blackstar clean channel can be quite nice too, you just need to get used to a different EQ for cleans as to what you would use for distortion

This guy gets a really good tone without any of that?

Yes he does, the difference with the eq and screamer is just flat out bonkers tho, especially for more articulated riffage.

cool good to know cause i am really leaning towards grabbin the H5mini stack for my at home amp?

the peavey i was looking at sounds too much like paper ripping or something?

Re: Blackstar HT-5H Question

Well it's Blackstar for me!

heres another reason not that you need it:biglaugh::fing2:

Re: Blackstar HT-5H Question

Never mind the Blackstar mini stack. Try a HT-5H through a 4x12" cabinet.

Re: Blackstar HT-5H Question

Even without an EQ in the loop it's a great little amp. Add the EQ though and it's just nuts. I have a tubescreamer in front too. Lots of tonal options from a metal/higher gain standpoint. The clean channel is decent too, but that's probably not what you buy an amp like this for =).

Re: Blackstar HT-5H Question

I run my blackstar ht5-Rh through my 2x12. It is loud as hell. Haven't had a chance to play with a drummer yet, but I'm not worried at all, at least for the sake of practice. I can do whatever I want with this amp, there haven't really been any limitations so far. Of course, I do notice the difference in headroom compared to my 40 watt xxx. I don't know why anyone would by that blackstar mini-stack of 1x10 cabinets, just get an affordable used 2x12 or 4x12 cabinet for about the same price.
