Body painted.

Re: Body painted.

There is thread going on at Jemsite of a guy with the same problem as yours. It seems that the paint doesn't really gather around the upper horn:

Since every dip would yield different result, how many dip/ coat of paint does this take? I think one coat would be too thin, no?

One dip is enough, just have to be sure there's enough paint on the surface. More than one dip would be swirl on top of swirl. Though that could be interesting.

Re: Body painted.

Having a friend shoot the clear for me. Got the neck back today. Should get the body back Monday.

Ooh, shiny.

Re: Body painted.

Me likey! Cool technique.

What clear is your buddy using?

I just love a unique looking axe.

Auto clear. Not sure what kind. 2k somethin-or-other. He sprays high end cars. He had a clear job this morning and had me bring the guitar in so he could shoot it after the car. He did say he used like $200 worth on the guitar. The crap is like 2 grand a gallon....or maybe a quart. I forget.

Re: Body painted.

I use House of Kolor USC-01 Show Klear clearcoat on guitars and on show cars and restorations. It's about $800 a gallon with hardener and reducer. I put about $100 worth on a guitar.

He's probably using PPG or Glasurit. That will give you a near bulletproof finish, and it cures to about 2.5 to 4 mils thick depending on application. So it's thin enough that it shouldn't affect your tone. (Thats mils, or thousandths of an inch. ..not millimetres lol )

Re: Body painted.

He did say it'll be around 2mil. Yeah, and I was thinking millimeters. Thanks for clearing that up.

Re: Body painted.

Got the body back yesterday, and I am SO pleased with the outcome. I was seriously thinking of re-dipping the guitar for a third time, now I'm glad I didn't. My buddy's clear work hid most all of my touch up flaws. If you look super close, you'll see some little things here and there. But hell, if someone is that close to my guitar while I'm playing it, I rather she be looking up at me while she's down there....8)

Need to decide on a pup. Thinking '78 or Custom Custom, as this is going to be my Eb guitar and I'd like to get some old VH-ish sounds with it.

Thanks all!

I ended up throwing in a Neo Z bridge that I had laying around. I may be posting about that in the pickup forum, 'cause it isn't sounding quite right.

Been noodling the hell out of this thing. Its my first real whammy guitar. I don't count my Squire Strat or my '84 Ibanez Roadstar II, which has been blocked for 20 years.

A couple more pics. I even think the back is kind of cool, where the paint got thin and I didn't touch it up.

Not sure about the small primer dots on the butt. I must've set it down and scratched through at some point before it was cleared?

Red Bobbin Toppers!!!

:headbang:

:D

I thought about that......but, I don't know.
