Bogner Bliss

Laste night was the first time I used my new Shiva with the Band. I bought this a few months ago and played thru it a few times at home and recognized that this amp is a Killer. At home I use a Marshall 900 that I A/B with a 67 or 68 Super Reverb, and quite honestly I was/am very happy with the versatility I get with this. The reason I bought the Bogner was to try to get everything in one box and easier to move.

With the Band I have been using a 67 Deluxe Reverb.......... a super good amp, but the lack of headroom was giving my some issues. I was kind of rushed. I got to practice a little late so I really did not have top much time to dial it in. I really didn't need to though. This amp smoked all night.

I used my 68 SG standard and my Candy apple red Tele that has a Strat pup in the neck. I used my tube screamer kind of like a clean boost. I set it with no drive and adjusted the tone to color the sound as little as possible. I only used this for solos using the clean channel. The Drive channel was just flat out amazing. The amp was solid and tight with everything I did. Every note in every chord rang thru clearly and the sustain and overtones were beautiful. I was so happy with it I took my Deluxe home and I will be using the Bogner from now on.

The other guitar player uses a MArshall 800, another really fine sounding amp. He commented after the rehearsal asking how much I paid for it. Which I told him.... He said he was going to look into one also. His 800 with his Les Paul sounded really good, so I am not sure why, but I think the Bogner impressed him as much as it dod me................ Best channel switching amp I have ever played thru!!

Re: Bogner Bliss

great review - thanks for sharing it .... glad to read that you are so happy with it .. which shiva model do you have? (tubes? verb? speaker(s)?)

Re: Bogner Bliss

I haven't found any amp that comes close to a Bogner. It's not just the tone and versatility, it's the feel of the amp. Bliss is a good way to describe the feel under your fingers. There's always been an amp and tone in my mind, which I'd always wanted to have, and the day I discovered Bogner is the day I discovered that sound in my head. I love the Ecstasy and know it forward and backward. I can dial in any sound I want. My only complaint is that it's friggin LOUD. I use a few tricks for bringing down the volume, like half power in Class A mode, but ideally I'd love to have Bogner make a 60 watt Ecstasy. I'm also excited to try out the new Duende, but the local dealer says they won't be shipped for awhile longer. Most likely, Reinhold is making sure it's going to kill every other 6V6 amp before it's ready to ship.

Re: Bogner Bliss

Sweet! I really like the tone from the Shiva and the Ecstasy. (Man you should hear Gearjonser with his strat and Bogner.. pretty serious chops and tone going on there! :) )

Glad you like it.. I just may have to get Bognerized in the near future :D

Do you have the EL34 model? Open back or closed back?

Re: Bogner Bliss

I am giving BLUDAVE and Gearjoneser the FINGER right as I type this for 2 reasons:

1) Everytime I get over my Bogner jones - someone posts this crap
2) Gee, Thanks for pushing the Bogner in my face - yet again!

DAMMIT!

Re: Bogner Bliss

Glad you're liking your Shiva Bludave, I'm loving mine as well :)

The Shiva is one LOUD mofo. Strangely enough, with Bogner's "ducking" cable (Shiva FX Cable), the amp gets much louder. People who say these amps can't get lead tones haven't tried a MOSFET style clean boost through the FX Loop.

There is only one negative I can say about the Shiva and that is that the cleans do break up at loud stage volumes, but for the most part they retain their character at louder volumes. The overdrive continues to be one of my favorite parts of the amp. I like how it gets thicker and more compressed as you turn up the gain (around 3 o'clock, it gets this unreal thick, crunchy medium high gain tone).

Re: Bogner Bliss

How much do Bogner's run? I know they can get super crazy...like $4K or whatever...but is there an "entry" model, like a 50 watt head in the $2K or under range? How about a single channel?

Or just kick me to the curb & point me in the general direction of a good website.

Gracious!

Re: Bogner Bliss

I have the EL34 1 12" 75W Celestian Closed back. I am playing basically Blues and some classic rock. We are doing some R&B from the 60's, some BB King and some Hendrix and Cream. I had initially planned on buying the same model in a head and getting a 2 12" with V30's, but the price on this was just too good to pass up. The amp is providing me with all the tone I want with very little effort. I was amazed at how tight the amp was considering it has 1 12" speaker. We played White Room and the Opening chords as a whole just sounded awesome.

I don't think this would be the amp for Metal, The Extacy would probably be better for that. Or if this had 4 12"'s it might add a little more color and depth to it. I will have acess to a 4 12" with vintage 30's in it in the near future. I plan on plugging it into this to see what happens, but the convienence of a combo is hard to deny.

Next week I will play my Strat Equipped with Texas Hots and my 335. That should send my Bliss into Overdrive!

Depending on the configuration meaning head & cab or Combo.
The EL34 1 12" 80W Shiva runs in the area of 1800 to 2500. 1800 would be used. The Extacy's go for about 3K. Its a lot of money no question, but I will stand behind my earlier comment that this Shiva is the best channel switching amp I have ever played thru.

Re: Bogner Bliss

What FX units sound good with the SHIVA?

I have never heard one up close with any real FX, like verbs and delays or chorus etc on them.

Re: Bogner Bliss

Just like Olin, every time I seem to forget about the Shiva someone pops up and mentions it. Thanks guys ..... your not helping :smack:

These amps don't need a lot of effects, The Shiva I have has Reverb in both channels so I don't need a reverb effect. On my pedal board (which was setup for my Deluxe Reverb) has a CH1 chorus, a DD3 delay, a Tudescreamer modded by Stratdeluxer, a Vox Clude McCoy, and a tuner on it. Thats not much and I am running all of it straight in. I will eventually have the CH1 and the DD3 running thru the loop, but from the little I have used this board with this amp I am not sure I need to. It sounded pretty good going straight in.

Re: Bogner Bliss

The only issue I'm having with my Shiva right now is the FX Loop. I'm kinda pissed that Reinhold made it so ****ty. I've tried two different valued FX ducking cables for it and I still can't get the amp to sound right with the FX Loop enabled. The amp simply sounds a lot clearer and richer with the FX Loop not used at all :smack: However, I NEED the FX Loop for running a clean boost pedal for leads (brings up the volume because the "boost" isn't enough).

Cris......... Bogner has a mod for this. They can add a volume control for the boost and can also make the boost work in both channels. You might want to speak to them directly about your concerns... I did and they told me about this mod ($160.00). They may also have a soultion to the issue with your effect loop. I don't use a lot of effects Chorus and a little Delay ocassionally so I don't see a need to address this at this time but I may need to in the future. What I did and I just did this on the spur of the moment.... I set my Tubescreamer with hardly any drive at all, adjusted the tone to color the sound as liittle as possible and adjusted the volume the way I wanted it and I used that as a clean boost in the clean channel, I have the OD channel set with a little more volume, so in a sense this gave me three different volume levels to work with. I had the volume of the clean channel. the clean with the Tubescreamer on and the Drive channel and then the boost in the Drive channel.

I agree with what your saying the Boost does not seem to have much volume too it, but you can hear a slight increase and a more gainy type of setting.

Re: Bogner Bliss

Hey BluDave, yeah, I'm a moron :smack: I realized this last time I plugged in the "ducking" cable backwards. Apparently, the side where the plug is modded goes into the first pedal in the FX Loop and the other side (the normal side) goes into the FX Loop send. Once I had switched it around, I got clarity back.

It's still a stupid design and I think Bogner should have that ducking cable FAQ updated because I've tried it with their resistor values (which is a 100k in series with the center conductor of the cable) and it sounds MUCH better with a 47k resistor in series with the center conductor. The 4.7k resistor between the tip and the ground on the plug still stays there. It almost sounds dead on to the amp without the FX Loop now.

MOSFET style clean boosts and a Pro Analog Dual Drive (or transparent drive of your choice) will do wonders for your lead tones (clean boosts for clean volume increase to cut through the mix and a light transparent boost for thickening up leads and adding sustain). Unfortunately, the stock leads are lacking.

GJ, if you don't get an Airbrake for that Bogner soon I'm gonna kill ya. :laugh2:

Seriously... compared to all your other stuff it's a drop in the bucket. I don't know how i lived without mine!

I missed winning an auction on an Airbrake recently. Do you think the Airbrake is clearly better than a THD? I'll get one of them soon enough. Right now, I'm spending all my free money on glasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses.
I'd rather play loud'n'proud than look like 'Mr. 4 eyes' right now. :laugh2:
