hey I thought this had a great clean sound and for 6L6 distortion I thought it had great tone.
the cleans are punchy and sparkley and sound nice and the distortion has a huge amount of gain but it didnt sound all muddy or out of control fuzzy. it doesnt have the clip of a el34 tube amp but its softer clip is still there and the distortion tone is good.
I have not played the newest amp-the caveman?-somthing like that. but anyway here is some info on the shiva with 6L6 power tubes. I have not played the shiva with el34 power tubes so I cant vouch for that. :beerchug:

Re: bogner shiva 6L6

It must be good enough for Sting's guitar player. I just saw him on TV last night with a Bogner Shiva 2-12 combo and a strat.

Re: bogner shiva 6L6

Never tried one but heard both clips of the 6L6 and EL34 Shivas and I prefer the 6L6 tone.

Re: bogner shiva 6L6

maybe the best shiva then is the one with the 6L6 tubes. I thought the clean and distortion sounded good. I thought the distortion sounded much more focused and tighter than other 6L6 tube amps and the cleans were as good as most fenders. To me this is a good all around amp. the quality is certanly there :beerchug:

Re: bogner shiva 6L6

I played through a SHive EL34, and I was blown away. The ONLY reason I did not buy it is after reading so many posts here about the Shiva, Extacy and other Bogners, I thought I should wait until I had a chance to play thru a few different models.

I thought the Caveman was a discontinued model not a new model

Yep, the Caveman was an early prototype and has been long discontinued. I keep hearing mixed reviews on whether the 6l6 or EL34 one is better, so until I play them side by side, I wouldn't have a clue what to get.

Re: bogner shiva 6L6

Dang... all this talk about Bogners... I need to try one!!!! I've actually managed to find a store here in Portugal that sells them, so I need to get off my lazy ass and go try them out!

And I also need to start saving money... :)

Re: bogner shiva 6L6

I have a Bogner Shiva 6L6 and it is possibly my favorite amp of all time (and I have had a ton of 'em). Worth every penny :).

you are probably right on the caveman. I went into some obscure music store location and saw it on there web sight. when I checked Bogners main sight I noticed it wasnt on there so I thought it was some new amp that they hadnt released any info on yet.-now that you guys say its discontinued it would make sense why its no longer on the main company web sight. Of couse they negated to mention that fact on the obscure music stores web sight hmmmmm :33:

Re: bogner shiva 6L6

I think my opinion is that if I were buying an open back combo, I'd get a 6L6 Shiva w/reverb. I think the EL-34 heads sound best with a closed back cab. The Ecstasy is the amp to get, if you can scrape together that kind of money, but it is a loud mofo. The Ecstasy's claim to fame is that it can do just about anything, and despite it's high wattage, it can actually be used at moderate volumes and still sound cranked. The Bogner sound is basically the Marshall sound with a bigger bottom end and a tad more compression. The natural tube compression is what gives it that cranked growly tone, probably due to the fact that they pound the tubes with high plate voltage. If you use a Bogner regularly, you need to change the tubes at least once a year.

Re: bogner shiva 6L6

I've heard and played through GJ's Ecstacy and I've heard a 6L6 Shiva at the Houston Amp Fest.

Two related amps, but different if that makes any sense.

At the UGD, the Bogner was the best amp there. I liked it with the 2x12 better than the 4x12. Seemed to give up the goods a bit easier. The Shiva is a darn fine amp. The deal is that the Ecstacy can nail down anything the Shiva can do. And, then the Ecstacy can do a lot more.

You'd be hard pressed to go wrong with either. The Shiva is a helluva lot more affordable. And, depending on your gigging situation, the Shiva is probably 10 times what the normal garage rocker needs. ( i said needs, not wants!)

Great amps. I'd be proud to own one of either. For Ecstacy kind of money, I can't justify owning that *and* a Two Rock. But, for a do it all swiss army knife amp that has no flaws, the Ecstacy is one of those amps I don't think you'd ever sell unless you needed cash, (which is good because they seem to hold their resale value)

Shiva probably falls into that "never sell" category as well and for sure still holds its value on the used market.

I think we're all such ho's when you get down to it, you kinda have to keep an eye on resale value when spend that much.

Re: bogner shiva 6L6

I love the ecstacy the best becouse I just love that distortion and the cool features it has. I love the clip plus gain and the tone is great. I still love that 6L6 clean tone of the shiva but of course the ecstacy has a fairly good clean tone as well. In my garage band hayday I would have killed for the ubershall but now I prefere the ecstacy's taistier distortion and I thought channel 3 on the ecstacy pretty much nailed the ubershall tone anyway.
this is the amp ime going after cuz I just love the amp overall. I think Scott F is right. Ime just a gear ho with a nasty addiction to good tone and I cant stop. :beerchug:

Re: bogner shiva 6L6

I think the Ecstasy's clean channel is really overlooked. The amp has 6 pre tubes, and each one effects a different part of the preamp circuit, plus FX driver and PI. On mine, I put GT12AX7C's in the blue and red channel pre section, and on the clean channel, I put a JJ ECC83, so it has more fatness with less gain. I have to say, even my two great clean amps, the Chieftain and Bassman LTD aren't necessarily better than the Ecstasy's clean channel. Since the clean channel can be set anywhere between a Twin and JTM 45, there's no lack of versatility in that channel. For most pop or blues, I end up using that channel exclusively with it's boost for midgain leads.
It's really the most perfectly designed amp, since Bogner fixed every shortcoming every other amp has, by making it so tweakable.

One thing a lot of people don't know is that the second presence on the amp is assignable to either the green or red channel, so if you want to add more glassy sparkle to the EL-34 clean tone, you just assign the presence to the clean, and bring it up till the tone takes on a more 6L6 sound. Reinhold thought of everything!

as always-good advice Joneser. I remember reading that in the manual at the guitar store but not haveing the time to try that out. I will be going back next week to pick up one of my guitars so I will have a chance to try that feature out. the ecstacy was so new at that store that the salesmen didnt even know how to tweak the amp when i got there. they handed me a copy of the owners manual and I basically read thru it as I sat in front of the amp after the salesmen and I had tweaked on the nobs for a wile. I will have to try the presence control out on the clean channel this time. I think I was likeing the distortion so much I spent less than 5 minutes with the cleans. I will be trying the clean channel out more this next visit.-thnx again for the info and good advice-I bow to your greatness :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy
