Boss SD-1 really does boost a Marshall perfectly!

Re: Boss SD-1 really does boost a Marshall perfectly!

I haven't had a Marshall behind me in quite some time, but when I did, I had an SD1 boosting it. That or a Jackhammer.

Amps and boost/OD boxes are like food and hot sauces - there's a ton of good ones out there but the real magic happens when you pair the right ones up with each other.

GJ, don't forget those MXR's have that switch inside them, if you move it to the ZW setting it's pretty close to SD-1 territory. And yeah, the OD-3 is nothing like the OD-1 or SD-1. I like to call it a Rat-lite.

This is one aspect of the whole Marshall ethos and the people who inhabit that ethos that I really dig.

A simple Boss overdrive or Tube Screamer is basically all they need.

Step outside the world of Marshall, and suddenly, everything is more complicated.

I have the cream and green MXR Classic OD's, and at one point had a Zakk Wylde. I know they're the same circuit with an internal mini switch. I decided I liked the Classic OD mode because it was fatter and more open sounding. The Zakk is more compressed, but a pretty impressive pedal in it's own rite. I sold the Zakk Wylde MXR.

One time, I compared a bunch of OD/Dist pedals, and the OD-3 was pretty good, and the one that beat it was the Cmatmods Brownie.

Hmmm, I dunno. I've used the same SD-1 for over 30 years through many types of tube amps and it's always worked wonderfully well. (I'll qualify that by saying i don't use modern high-gain type amps, only vintage-style amps with either no master volume control or m/v amps that can be run 'backwards' to emulate a non-m/v amp). Fender, Marshall, Vox, Boogie, homebrew and various others in that style that I can't remember .... it's always worked great. The thing is overdrive pedals work best when the amp is being used at a decent volume so the pedal contributes more boost than dirt. I'm inclined to think it's not so much about a 'Marshall/simplicity' v's 'non-Marshall/complexity' issue, but more about the mind of the user ... if you keep things simple, it's more likely to work well. That's where I come from and regardless of anything that's ever been said to me about playing, not once have i ever been told my sound has been lacking or been problematic.
