Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

Re: Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

Tom's contribution to rock music is huge, particularly in production and engineering. What he did in recording and mixing a complete and ready for print Boston album was unheard of, and his technical prowess in designing his own gadgets to obtain his sound, etc is undeniable.

As a guitarist and rock star, Tom was competent, but not a standout by any means.

However, sig guitars are not about entitlement, they're all about sales. And while Tom and Boston might seem like nothing more distant memories from many people's childhood hearing it on the radio in their parents car, fact is Boston as a classic rock brand is iconic and Gibson is marketing to a specific target group with this - middle aged guys with money who want to relive their classic rock years.

Re: Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

Well said TC, but I still have to question one thing . . .

What he did in recording and mixing a complete and ready for print Boston album was unheard of . . .

Hadn't Todd Rundgren been doing this for a good decade before Tom? Mind you, Todd was a horrendously bad recording engineer, but at least, he was doing it.

I loved the first Boston album. It was fresh and different. But the DJ's played it to death, and by the time the 2nd album came out, even hardcore fans were joking about it being the re-release of the 1st album. It just seems to me that a more appropriate tribute to Tom would have been a cool new guitar effects/processing unit, designed by him. (Think, Rocktron Prophesy.) The Rockman was a killer unit.

Heh, I wanted to hate it, but I actually dig that.

If it's a dime over $1500 it's a total ripoff though.

And Boston still sucks.

Well you just said it yourself.

Scholz's product was ready for distribution and of studio quality right out of his basement. He shopped a finished product to the labels that was of the same quality they could produce at the time. IMO that's a pretty significant difference.

Overplayed, I agree. As are most super-groups.

And I also agree a processing unit of effects being a more fitting tribute, but again, this isn't about tribute its about sales and Gibson is trying to cash in on the demographic I mentioned, most of which would rather dump money on guitars than effects.

As for the second album sounding like a re-release of the first, most bands fit that bill. Look at AC/DC. In fact, I remember reading an interview years and years ago by EVH who commented on AC/DC, "They play the same song over and over, but it's a great song."

Here's the real deal.

Re: Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

Will Gibson include the Mighty Mouse sticker with the guitar? For that kind of money they'd better.

Re: Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

I have no issue w/ the man getting a sig guitar. He more than made his mark on Classic Rock. I have a problem with Gibson making it a Collectors Choice model that will carry at least a $6000 price tag. I don't find that part overly awesome at all. A regular production run? Sure! Not a collectors choice.

BOHICA! (bend over here it comes again) I'll add that I too agree he is more worthy of a sig model than many who get them, but fully agree that this should be priced as a BFG or upscale BFG. (binding) As someone else posted, I too really liked the Blackwater guitar because of the look and the features (except the stars) and it was at least priced as most guitars in that feature range.

Re: Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

I wish they would bring back the Rockman!!

3 members of my band have new rockmans............one for the bass player and one for each guitar player (2 guitarists)..............not the same I'm sure but they are for sale.
What is strange is already 2 different people on Ebay are selling the Tom Sholz Signature Gibson Les Paul ................a little over 5k each or so................two of them..............wasn't it just announced? Could this be really true? They seem legit and have pics and certificates. Strange.....

Is it normal or real to have Gibson announce in an April 2013 article it will release the Tom Sholz guitar and then have it for sale days later?
They look very real on Ebay but seems hard to believe Gibson would move that fast and be ready?
I heard and read about it last year but didn't seem confirmed other than Tom and the Gibson people were talking and working on this together.
Just asking if anyone finds this hard to believe it's already for sale by private individuals?
Thank you.

^^^^^^^^^^^^

I've seen a few quickly up for grabs(RR comes to mind),I guess the ones "post-prototype" are maybe peddled thru one of their better dealers,or perhaps the store owners.
Usually really low s/n & such...

Just guessin' tho.

Re: Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

Dudes... I think it's pretty damn hot.

Ya'll know you'd rock the hell out of it.

Re: Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

^^ They would, it's all denial.

One good thing about it is that it doesn't scream: 'look at me, I'm a sig guitar!' when you look at it, just a natural LP with a modded pu.
