Bought a Marshall 4X12!

Unreal! I've been wanting to try one out for the longest time and finally found a deal on one that was to good to pass up. It's a 2003, 1960B Vintage cab. Upon first trying it out with my DSL 50 I found out very quickly that a 4X12 is truly the other half of the Marshall equation. It sounds so good it makes you want to play! I think the one quality that I love the most is that "depth" of the sound, something that for me always seemed to be lacking. Even under heavy attenuation you can hear that depth to the tone.

It's funny, but even my next door neighbor who teaches music in high school noticed that "your tone sounds a LOT better. What did you do?"

For the first time nothing sounds like it's lacking, and my Strat with the Blues Saraceno absolutely kills!! And for the first time I'm not using reverb or delay all the time because even dry it sounds fantastic! I may be an older guy who's just an at home player but I know what I like to hear and I've finally gotten it!

Re: Bought a Marshall 4X12!

Congratulations on the purchase! I'm glad you're happy with it. Good call on the vintage cab too! Those vintage 30s sound so much better than the G12-75s.

Re: Bought a Marshall 4X12!

I know exactly what you're talking about. The DSL-50 is one of my favorite amps. For me that amp has the Grin Factor because it's just so fun to play. And it's so easy to dial in, too. Played one today though a B-52 cab and it's still sounded good but so much better with a Marshall cab. Even on the clean channel with the volume at about 4 and gain about 6, that amp just kills. It's so easy to play. E A D (repeat) and I'm a Rock Star. It's hard to make that amp sound bad. Rock On!!

WOO HOO ! ! !

What are the speakers in that cab? Way to go. Good luck with it. :smokin:

Re: Bought a Marshall 4X12!

Call it a happy accident or something, but there's a reason why the Marshall 4x12 is the standard speaker cab for electric guitar. I agree that the V30 loaded one is better than the 75's loaded one too.

Re: Bought a Marshall 4X12!

If I'm not mistaken I believe the speakers are the Vintage 30's. 70 watts each and the whole cabinet is rated at 280 watts. Really, I can't tell you all how much I love how this thing sounds!

Sweet deal!

Re: Bought a Marshall 4X12!

Well I have a pair of T75's left over, and really, they don't sound too bad in a 2x12 cab, or in an open back combo amp, ...for cleans that is. They still make distortion sound more fake and slightly proccessed to my ears, even then though. However, I absolutely don't like em in a 4x12, in any combonation or in any pattern.

I think it's because they have virtually no mids and plenty of treble. With a 4x12 closed back, the intaction of sound waves inside the box effect how the cones vibrate, increasing lows and highs, and reducing mids slightly. This just makes the empty mids and "extended treble" even worse.

Mixxing G12H30's or Greenback 25's in with V30's does add more crunch and help cleans though.

Re: Bought a Marshall 4X12!

I can't understand anyone not wanting a 4x12. I can't understand anyone not understanding why I bring a 4x12 to small gigs. Nothing else does it. Maybe there is a 2x12 that emulates that "bigness" but I haven't found one.

Re: Bought a Marshall 4X12!

I have a Marshall 1960A 4x12 with the 75's in it, and I absolutely love it with my 2205. I had a pair of V30's in a 2x12, and found them too smooth. I liked the grit of the 75's better...to each his own. I'd like to mix something else into my cab at some point.

Congrats Mike....nothing like Marshall tone, IMO.

+1. After playing 2x12s for a long time, I'm finally enjoying that huge sound I get from 4x12s and it makes that extra pain of carrying it absolutely worth it. I used to think I could get away with 2x12 cabinets, but I knew that the lowend, punch and overall mix would have to be sacrificed to a certain degree. I think some cabinets like the THDs and the Bogner OS 2x12s do an excellent job of narrowing the gap between the 2x12 and 4x12 sound, but they still aren't a direct replacement.

I play 4x12s at small gigs all the time, just ask joelap how it sounded ("the Space" where my band played is a little hole in the wall, but there's nothing more bad*ss than a half stack decently cranked).

Congrats on the Marshall! My studio friend uses a Greenback RI equipped Marshall 4x12'' and that's a great cabinet!

I'm in the same situation as you, and the same age. How do you manage to crank a 4x12 cab? I just got my first 1x12 combo.

Anyway . . . enjoy. Sounds fun. ;)

How do I manage to crank my Marshall? I have a basement, and I'm single!!

Re: Bought a Marshall 4X12!

Marshall 4x12 = chub factor! I've got a 1960A w/ G1275 speakers, and I've got a 1960B loaded w/ 2-V30's; and 2-Eminence Swamp Thangs, and I prefer the sound of the B cab. The bottom end is well defined, and the mids are nice, and fat. Congrats on your new purchase...I hope you peel the paint back on your walls with it!

Earcandy Buzzbomb. Expensive but does the trick. No kidding, it really does. Got a few 4X12s (Crate Blue Voodoo, H&K Triamp) and this Buzzbomb, and the Buzzy matches the big cabs in every way, maybe even a bit bigger bottom. Something to do with the depth and the bass reflex ports or whatever, but to my ears it's the goods.

Trust me, I'm not bustin' on your gear- I've never played a Crate 4x12, and the only HK cabs I've played were the ones that come with the Vortex SS amps. The HKs are nothing like my Marshall- they're great for what they do- but for tone, depth and thump I'll take the Marshall any day of the week... I don't know about the Buzzbomb- if it's bass reflex ported, that's something different in a guitar cab I haven't experienced- OTOH, it's not a sealed cab and I would expect it to respond as such.

I got really spoiled with scoring my first "real" cab as this Marshall- trying to find something that's the same but smaller has been futile- I've played literally more than a dozen vintage and "high end" cabs and nothing approximates my 4x12. The 2x12 I have now is deeper and wider than my Marshall, so the internal volume is greater per speaker than the Marshall, but still doesn't have that "thump" or tone that the 4x12 has. I've had 4 sets of speakers in it (stock Utah, Eminence or Jensen from my 65/66 Bassman cab, 2 of the Blackbacks from my Marshall, and the current Sound City branded Fanes) but it just doesn't give it up like a 4x12.

Re: Bought a Marshall 4X12!

Well, I recently joined the club myself....CONGRATS !!!

My 2x12s & 4x10s are great, but there is a huge difference, esp. at lower volumes.

Mine is a '74 1960 cab (slant, but no 1960A designation) w/original G12M-25s...sounds so friggin' smooth, it's SICK !!!

Again, CONGRATS :beerchug:
