Bought my first PRS - and I Love It!

Re: Bought my first PRS - and I Love It!

Boing!

How do you intonate that thing?

You don't.

PRS has a pretty damn confident statement, full of swagger, on their website that unequivocally states that the manufacturing tolerances, everything from how and where they age the wood, to where they locate each bridge, are so damn tight that a bridge with adjustable intonation is not necessary.

It pretty much says "it's intonated properly."

I have one, and I gotta say, they're right. It is.

Re: Bought my first PRS - and I Love It!

Congrats. I shopped the SE Tremonti & was very impressed. The neck is a little fatter than I prefer, but not bad. The tone is great. The fingerboard & fretwork are outstanding for a "budget" guitar. The feel is great. I was looking for one in Sliver but unfortunately they had been discontinued. Only available in black, so I passed. I'm waiting to see a 2010 SE SingleCut in "natural". I may snag one if I like the look. Much better guitar than an Epi LP.

The downside to the SE series guitars is that they are not very attractive. They play & sound great, they just look ugly. IMHO. I suspect this is marketing to prevent devaluing the higher priced PRS models. Too bad for the rest of us.

Enjoy.

Re: Bought my first PRS - and I Love It!

Thanks guys. There aren't any plans to change the pickups and even if I do, I'll be sticking with black. I just like that look on this one. Kinda like the Slash Goldtops. The intonation is pretty much spot on. I'm still going to check it to be sure and there are two little allen screws on the back of the bridge behind the posts on either side to fine tune it if necessary.

Was playing it this morning and the way I guess I could describe the tone is the warmth and fullness of mahogany with a little added snap and response of a Strat. A really nice sound, very sweet. The access to the upper frets is great, better than the Tele I just sold and better than any LP I ever played. Real easy to do full-step bends at the 22nd fret.

I feel like I'm playing a $1000+ guitar even though I didn't pay that. Just great workmanship all around. I like that it doesn't have all the fancy inlays and binding that the USA models have (though I do like the half-moon inlays on it, very nice touch). It's simple, sounds great, feels great, and is priced right.

Re: Bought my first PRS - and I Love It!

This is one of the pics I took this morning. First one too and actually the best of all of them. It looks so much nicer in person.

nice!

Re: Bought my first PRS - and I Love It!

Does anyone know if these are long-tennon necks on the SE Single Cut? I hate to ask, but next time you change the strings, would you mind unscrewing the neck pickup and checking?

Re: Bought my first PRS - and I Love It!

The SE One that FretFire just got is long tenon. He took the pickguard off and you can clearly see it. Not that it matters any anyway, at least to me. Short or long, who cares as long as it sounds good. My bet though is that it is long. Funny though, I usually would have checked the pickup cavities and opened the control cavity by now but I haven't.

Re: Bought my first PRS - and I Love It!

very cool - enjoy

if that had a 24.5" scale and two P90s, i'd be on it like white on rice

Hell hath frozen over...

Erik bought a freakin' PRS :eyecrazy:

Yep, ErikH is correct. Here's a photo for convenience, click to enlarge. I would assume the Singlecut is similar.

They used to have this one, http://www.prsguitars.com/sesoapbar/index.html, but it is now discontinued, and it was 25" scale.

Never thought this would happen, did ya? LOL

I'll know for sure at next string change. I'm curious about the pickup cavity depth as to whether long legs will fit in there or not.

I have one of those, and even with all my coil splits and P-Rails and Triple Shots and all that, the PRS SE Soapbar with two P90s and a simple 3 way switch always proves to be the most versatile.

I love it.

Mine is ugly though - black on black on black. I wish it was white.

They had super secksy black-tinted flame maple Singlecut with a gold Floyd on it, zebra pickups, and a bound fretboard on the back cover of Premier Guitar last year. I was in love with it.

It was a PRS Custom Shop ad

edit: found it:

Yeah, I imagine a guitar like that runs a teensy weensy bit beyond what our man Erik coughed up for the limba SE!

Re: Bought my first PRS - and I Love It!

Very sweet score there Erik! I love the look of those korina SE's.

Thanks. The fretboard is pretty dark. It makes those half-moon inlays really pop.

Yeah, that Singlecut with the Floyd is just a wee bit more expensive...LOL. That's something Neal Schon would play in a second.

Very sweet score there Erik! I love the look of those korina SE's.

Thanks, Stevie. It's a player as well as a looker.

Re: Bought my first PRS - and I Love It!

oh yeah, i know
its all about scale length for me at this point

Do you really feel enough of a difference between 24 3/4" and 25"? That's only a 1/4" difference. All of my other guitars are 25 1/2" scale and I've played those most of my playing life and yet the 25" scale doesn't feel all that different. It's definitely more of a change going to 24 3/4" for me but 25" is comfortable, and that's a 1/2" difference.

Re: Bought my first PRS - and I Love It!

yeah, i do feel (and more importantly hear) the difference between "gibson", "PRS", and "Fender" scales ... i mean, i own and enjoy guitars of both scale lengths ... but i have plenty of 25.5" guitars and only one 245 ... so i want my next guitar to be "gibson" scale and 2 P90s ....

i was real close to pulling the trigger last week, but then got notice that i got hit with the alternative minimum tax to the tune of owing $2500 to the IRS .... so while i am not firing up the engines on the cessna, i wont be buying a ~$1k guitar this week :D
