Bought this beast

Re: Bought this beast

I have one myself.. I like it a lot but I haven't got to fiddle with it a lot yet.. I use a condenser mic (Studio Projects BX-1), and it is supposed to tackle the sound pressure.. It's fine enough.

Re: Bought this beast

USB? Go Firewire -- the interface is designed for high-throughput time-dependent media. USB was designed for keyboards.

Re: Bought this beast

Basic rundown on microphones.
Condenser mics, as a general rule, have a flatter, wider frequency range than dynamic. But dynamic mics can handle higher sound pressures.
The pole patern on condenser types can also be altered (depending on type) so you can alter how directional the response is. Dynamic mics tend to be more unidirectional (they only pick up what they're pointing straight at).

Nice looking gizmo mind.

Re: Bought this beast

there were a few billing issues so I had to reorder it...it will be here by friday...then the mics.

Re: Bought this beast

Hey do you know which AKG mic they're giving you? It doesn't say anywhere. This seems like a nice portable interface, but the free mic could tip the scales. I called MF and they didn't know either. I'm wondering if it's one of a few mics (based on surplus)

Re: Bought this beast

Isnt firewire double the price? My puprpose is just a decent recording that will give an idea of my amps tone and song's vibe for other musicians who might wanna join me on the project if i want to record something for real I will go into the studio ....

this is a good point. I had thought about this before. I don't know which mic I'm getting. If it doesn't capture the sound well, I won't post clips of it....or maybe I will to show others how it well it does capture the sound. I'd post it with comparison clips, of course.

Re: Bought this beast

Firewire is better.

Ok you're right. firewire is better. Firewire has the capability to send data full duplex (both ways at once) and USB does not. However, USB 2.0 actually has a higher data rate than regular firewire.

The advantage of firewire means jack when we're talking about a two channel interface. This unit will pass a signal into a computer just as well as a similar firewire unit because USB has plenty of power to pass two channels in and two channels out. The advantage of firewire comes in when you start getting into interfaces that use more than two input channels.

THank you !!! That and the fact that lamda is 50% cheaper just made me decide.

Only on paper, and only for FW400 vs USB 2.0 (400 vs 480 mbps).

That said, Firewire is a constant stream of data, where USB goes in "chunks," so to speak. USB is faster for small file transfers, but for a constant stream of data, or for large, large files, Firewire will be better and work faster.
