Re: Boutique PAFs comparison?

You are welcome!
The Timbucker is very, very "Woody" (if that is defined as you are getting the true tone of the guitar through the pickup with minimal EQ shaping and added output). It is far from "raw" or "upfront".
The PGn definitely has more under the hood and I think that I will switch back to that pup. I just need to decide if swapping the Timbucker Neck will have a significant impact on the middle position tone of the Timbucker set.
Dr. B, what do you think? Would I be a fool to take out the Tim neck?
I feel what you say. The middle position with tims is GREAT, and as Matt is saying I think that is due to that radical change from the bridge tone into the neck tone. A bright screaming bridge with a very woody neck tone I feel gives a better middle position.
Moreover, again like Falstaff I am loving (adoring) the neck tone I get from tim's neck HB. That's why I got back to using a stock dun-aged magnet in my ant neck (and with an a5 ant bridge that is sort of physically unbuckerized, following tim's design

On the other hand PGn tone is a must have. I dunno about you but I like them like 8.00K in the neck, for that thick, round, somewhat non-woody tone. In fact strangely enough even though the bridge of rolph's 59's and timbuckers sound quite alike, the necks of them are very different. Rolph's neck measures 7.80K (whereas tim's is 8.00K) but is more thick, more round, but still retaining a lot of harmonics. I'd say the pickup that gets closest to it is a 8.00K PGb I use in the neck. Great pickup. But the middle position with rolph's isn't as good as that from timbuckers. :smack:
BTW if you have a dun-aged magnet out of an ant hb handy, try using it in a 8.00K PGb, you'd be surprised. I did that, and it sounded really very timbucker neck like. :smoker: I know this is not what you are looking for, just sharing.
You gotta try that PGn of yours with the timbucker bridge. The middle position cannot become that bad (mine from rolph's isn't as good as that from tim's ok but still it is a great middle sound).
And make sure to let us know. OK?
Best,
B
